    Isadora-Episode 35

Val’s side of the story continues from previous episode (same day)

Scene : Mr Simon’s office (the private investigator)
‘’so how is the task going? I haven’t heard from you in a long while’’ I asked the old man as I sat facing him in his office. He smiled and leaned back on his chair.

‘’we are making great progress Val. We have been able to track down the truck that ran over Isadora and her family to a ware house belonging to her uncle. It really took quite an effort to pull off but I have the best team, so just relax and wait for us to conclude every stage of the investigation. Once we are done, you will have all you need. Give me more time’’ he replied while I smiled and nodded.

‘’that’s good but I need you guys to hurry. As long as she is in that house, she will continue being in great danger. I just don’t know what made her to move in with them in the first place’’ I poured out breathlessly.

‘’you have done enough already for the girl. She’s an adult and she’s free to do whatever she wants. Don’t get yourself too involved in her situation’’ he advised. I stood up, shook hands with him and left.

Yes I really was happy the way the investigation was going but I was scared things might not end the way I wanted, moreover Isadora was being too stubborn for my liking and if not that I had already gotten involved would have just left her to fight her battles alone.

Meanwhile back at the house, Isadora is seen still trying to revive the lifeless body of Chuka as she waited for his parents to show up. In few minutes Jane and her mother barged in, looking extremely terrified…

Isadora’s side of the story continues

‘’what happened?, what happened to him?’’ Jane’s mother anxiously asked as she grabbed the lifeless body of her son, shaking him with great energy. The look of fear and anxiety in her was way too much. I equally was totally at lost. For some seconds I couldn’t mutter anything.

‘’he rushed into my room bleeding heavily. He muttered some incoherent words before collapsing. I can’t really tell what happened to him’’ I nervously explained.

‘’call the gateman, we have to take him to the hospital right away’’ she said to Jane who instantly dashed out of the room.

‘’he was stabbed, my son was badly stabbed. Oh my god don’t let Chuka die’’ she cried as she examined his wounds. I couldn’t do anything than stare. I had never experienced such a terribly horrific scene in my life.

The gateman soon showed up with Jane and together we carried Chuka’s lifeless body to the car and headed straight to a private hospital down the street but on getting there the doctor confirmed him dead.

‘’I’m sorry madam but your son is dead, there is nothing I can do to revive him. We will have to move him to our morgue if you approve and then you go make a police report’’ he said to the terrified woman who threw herself on the floor and wailed out her heart. You can’t imagine the state I was in that moment. Confusion, fear, regrets and tension all came together and took control of my body. I couldn’t say a word and no one cared to talk to me. I couldn’t help but wonder what was going through the minds of Jane and her mother.

Unfortunately I didn’t have to wait long to know because as soon as we got to the police station to file the report I got the biggest shock of my life. There and then I was accused of stabbing Chuka to death.

‘’this little witch here stabbed my son to death. She’s my husband’s niece and the only one close to my son after she came to live with us few weeks ago. I can’t tell what happened between them but my son died on her bed. Please torture her for me, get the truth from her. Her motive is to destroy my family’’ she screamed and cried at the police station and trust the Nigerian police, the officer on duty instantly pounced on me as if I was an armed robber and dragged me to the back of the counter where I was forced to sit on the floor.

‘’I didn’t stab him, I had no knife with me. You guys need to go back to the house and follow the trail of blood to see things for yourself. He came to my room bleeding’’ I pleaded desperately.

‘’is the body still in the house?’’ the officer asked Jane’s mum, surprising me with the strange question.

‘’no he’s at the morgue now’’ she sobbed, narrating her side of the story over again.

‘’very well then young girl you will have a lot of talking to do because the crime scene has already been corrupted and there is no way we can tell if he was bleeding before getting to your room. Moreover you look like a sharp girl and you definitely had the time and space to hide the crime weapon and set things to look like he bled to your room’’ the officer said while tears instantly filled up my eyes. Of course I realized that moment that the officer would prefer following the less strenuous job of playing along with my accuser than carrying out a thorough investigation.

‘’officer I know my son wasn’t a very good boy. He must have tried doing something to her and she stabbed him to death. I’m sure he never left the house and I’m sure nobody else came to the house to stab him’’ the old woman chipped in quickly

‘’but you were not at home, how would you know. It’s better to ask the gateman. He might know something’’ I sobbed. The officer stared at Jane’s mum and I as he probably tried to figure out the next line of action. Surprisingly Jane never uttered a single word all through the confusion and my uncle equally was yet to show up.

Isadora’s side of the story continues

Living with my new family really ushered in a new chapter of my life. Everyone in the house all appeared and behaved cool towards me, including Jane who tried her best to keep her distance as much as she could.

To be candid I wasn’t very much comfortable in the house but because of my plans had to try my best to cope with my new life and situation. My uncle on his own part tried to make me feel at home by making sure I had everything that would make me comfortable in his house but anytime I tried talking about my late parents and inheritance he always had this way of brushing my questions aside. It just seemed as if he only wanted to keep me in his house without any motive of telling me about my parents or giving me what belonged to me. Nevertheless I still played the fool and observed his moves without giving him cause to suspect that I wasn’t very happy with how he was acting towards my interest. Moreover my lawyer advised I give him little time and observe.

Val on his own part tried his best to reach out to me but I never gave him the opportunity. It just wasn’t time for love in my heart. I wasn’t ready to give in to his advances and romance. I had other bigger problems that were occupying my mind but he never really understood my position. He just felt I was being too difficult.

However one thing I was happy about was that his scheduled court wedding with Jane never held. The day came and went unceremoniously. I bet it was the worst day of Jane’s life.

The only true cousin or should I say companion I had that period was Chuka and yes he seemed like the wrong person to have as a companion but then he was very open and free with me unlike his siblings. The only bad thing about him was his bad habits which I tried my best to get him out of. Yes it wasn’t easy trying to get a chain smoker to quit but I had this zeal to change him into a better person and luckily he reluctantly was willing to change.

‘’see Isadora it’s not as if I don’t know that smoking is bad and all that but I can’t really help myself. I have done lots of terrible things due to my bad childhood and smoking is the only way to calm my emotions down and get rid of bad memories. I have done terrible things and I belong to a very dangerous group’’ he had confided in me one fateful evening when I tried talking more sense into him.

‘’sometimes we can’t help the bad choices we made in the past but two wrongs can never make a right. You can atone for your sins by following a good path’’ I had advised him.

‘’I can’t really get my life back. I can try to quit smoking but I can’t clear the bad things I did in the past from my conscience neither can I leave my group. I belong to a very deadly group and I can’t change my life. There is no way out for me’’ he poured out, getting me to see his own view.

It really was a very tedious task trying to change him but since I had nothing to do in the house, I spent most of my time with him and slowly my influence started getting on him. The change was soon noticeable and he barely left the house unlike in the past.
But I never expected what was to come with the change.

One late afternoon Three weeks later, he rushed into my room heavily bleeding all over. His entire body, shirt and trouser were soaked in his blood. I had never seen so much blood in my entire life and gosh I felt a great chill ran through me as he fell on me.

‘’what’s wrong?, what happened?’’ I asked breathlessly.

‘’I tried to quit. I tried to back out but I wasn’t allowed. It only got me this. I pray God forgives my sins’’ he stammered as he gasped for breathe. I really didn’t know what to do nor tell what he tried to back out from. I couldn’t equally figure out where he was attacked, if it was in the house or outside. I was so confused on what to do to help him and before I could get my phone to call his mum, he stopped breathing, leaving me totally terrified. We were the only ones in the house apart from the gateman at the gate.

What do I do now?’’ I wondered as I tried to revive the lifeless body of the only true brother I had in the house. Deep down I had this feeling I was in a way responsible for his misfortune.

Jane’s side of the story continues

I quickly rushed into Val’s room to confront him. Of course I couldn’t bear the information I just got nor pretend I never heard it. Perhaps I really cared about him more than I thought I did or maybe I was only fighting for my own interest.
‘’I heard Isadora was in this house today? So you knew where she was all along?’’ I asked Val with a raised tone as I barged into his room. He simply gave me an askance look and kept quiet, provoking me more with his silence.

‘’maybe you even planned everything with the sl.ut so that you can be having free moments with her while putting us in a big trauma’’ I shouted.

‘’you better stop getting yourself worked up because I owe you no explanation. You are not my wife. We are not yet married’’ he replied arrogantly as if I meant nothing to him. I felt like smashing his big head that moment. I was so filled with anger.

‘’and what did you do with her when she got here?’’ I asked breathlessly, but I knew better not to expect an answer from him. After standing for a minute, I walked out of his room and headed to his mother’s room to talk to her.

‘’what’s the shouts all about?’’ the old woman asked as soon as I walked in.

‘’mum you can’t believe Isadora was never missing. She and Val planned the whole thing. She was here when we all left for church. Martha told me and he isn’t denying it’’ I reported breathlessly
‘’oh good lord’’ the old woman gasped.

‘’you have to calm down my dear. I will talk to him. Don’t let anything ruin your wedding’’ she pleaded calmly.

‘’mum this is getting too much. Your son no longer loves me. He’s getting weirder every passing day. I can’t endure anymore. I don’t even want a big wedding anymore. I feel like losing this baby I’m carrying’’ I sobbed. She drew close and held me.

‘’just calm down my dear. A pregnant woman shouldn’t talk like that’’ she pleaded.

‘’mum I’m tired of everything. I can’t risk having a big wedding with the way Val has been behaving lately. He could end up embarrassing me. I prefer a court wedding with few people present. Mummy all I want now is a court wedding or nothing’’ I proposed with tears in my eyes. Of course nothing suited my plans perfectly well than a court wedding. I was making good use of the opportunity that presented itself.
‘’alright if that’s what you want, I will talk to my son and I believe he won’t object’’ she promised. I hugged her and left for my room to talk with my mother on phone. I had to inform her of the latest situation.

    _________________________

‘’I really can’t believe that girl is out to frustrate everyone. So now she’s attempting to steal your man huh?’’ my mum scoffed over the phone after I narrated everything to her.

‘’yes but I’m very much ready for her trust me’’ I breathed strongly. I still had Val under my control no matter what he might think and there really were a thousand and one things I could do to him if the need arises.

Val’s side of the story continues

I definitely knew I was going to have a long day that Sunday. Jane’s attitude equally never came as a surprise to me and when my mum showed up minutes after Jane left I knew she was there to talk the same thing.

‘’my son I heard the girl we all have been looking all over town for was here to see you. So you knew all along where she was?’’ my mum asked curiously.

‘’mum it’s a long story but believe me, I didn’t know that she was in town till today. I don’t want to talk about this for now mum. Please I want to be alone’’ I begged.
‘’fine but your fiancée is not happy. You are obligated to her which you know. You have to be very open with her in everything. And now she’s no longer interested on wedding you in church. She believes you no longer love her and is only going ahead with the marriage because of the child you are having together’’ she added while I looked at her curiously.

‘’really mum?’’ I asked while she kept quiet for some seconds.

‘’she wants a court marriage’’ she finally breathed as we stared into each other’s eyes.

Isadora’s side of the story continues

I returned to the house to discover that my adoptive parents, the hunter and another well dressed old man were all waiting for me. My heart jumped seeing all of them waiting for me.

‘’I gave you instructions not to go into town why did you disobey my instruction?’’ the hunter asked angrily.

‘’I’m sorry but I had to go get my pendant. It’s very valuable to me’’ I apologized.

‘’and where is it?’’ he asked
‘’I couldn’t find it. Someone took it’’ I replied.

‘’you mean you got into that house undetected’’ he asked.
‘’not really, It’s a long story’’ I breathed while they all exchanged glances.

‘’anyway I brought your late parent’s lawyer to see you. His name is Mr. Maduko and he’s more than delighted to represent you after I told him your story’’ he added while I threw a happy look at the lawyer who slowly stood up.
‘’yes my dear I will be more than pleased to represent you. Your parents were very good people. But you know this isn’t going to be easy. First we will have to meet your father’s brother and equally go for a DNA test to prove you are really who you are said to be. Then afterwards we can begin the process of getting back your inheritance and finally bringing up the case file of your parent’s death. It’s going to be a long process and I pray we all make it out alive in the end. The attempt on your life might not be unconnected with everything and so it means they are already aware of your threat. You have to be very careful with whatever you do from this moment or else you late parents won’t get justice’’ he addressed me softly while I gave out a deep breath.

Surely a big fight was ahead. And for the moment I only knew just two of my enemies. I didn’t really know the rest, especially my father’s brother.

I headed to Charles’s house after meeting with my parent’s to brief him on the latest situation of things. He really was very anxious to know every single detail and i hid nothing from him.

‘’hmmm so you guys want me to go back to that evil forest once again. That’s cool but it will cost money oo’’ he breathed after I was done with my story.

‘’no one is giving you a dime Charles. You failed in your last assignment and you owe my parents. But if you insist on getting paid, then forget about our own plans. I will marry Val and spend the rest of my life with him’’ I threatened seriously while he laughed.

‘’’come on, I was only playing’’ he laughed, drawing close to peck me. But I needed no telling that he changed his stand because of my threat.

    ‘’you better be’’ I sighed.

‘’I’m really glad the idi.ot and his mum fell for our plans. What’s remaining now is for you guys to get married. It’s just a matter of time for everything to fall in place for us’’ he added happily.

‘’what’s remaining is for me to get pregnant fast. Val is very educated and observant and any little mistake could bring up his suspicion. So I need to get pregnant fast’’ I muttered, lifting up his spirit with my words. I could even tell he was already aroused before I could finish the statement. He pounced on me with great energy.

‘’let’s make it happen babe. Let’s get you pregnant’’ he breathed as he fondled me.

‘’you know sir, I have told you everything about me but I still know nothing much about you apart from that you saved my life. All you keep telling me is that in due time I will know. I’m getting impatient sir. And I always have these strange feelings whenever I think of it. Morover we are in grave danger here’’ I softly said to the hunter who smiled and stared at me for some seconds. I could tell with the appetite he devoured my food that he enjoyed my cooking, even though the meal was far from being a perfect one.

‘’fine, I think you have had enough rest. I believe you are now strong enough to get hold of your destiny and find your identity. But Firstly you will have to take me to your adoptive parents, from there we can find out exactly who you are and everything about your real parents’’ he explained, expertly changing the topic and bringing up hope in my eyes which quickly died down.

‘’but I don’t think they will tell you anything. They weren’t very nice to me and I believe they just merely tolerated me because they had no other option. The only thing about my biological parents I have with me is a small pendant which I left behind in my employer’s house. I was told that I was an evil child and that the pendant had powers’’ I breathed, looking down.

‘’don’t worry about your fears. In two days you will take me to Nsukka to see your adoptive parents’’ he muttered with a smile while I nodded and shrugged in resignation.

    ________________________________

    Two days later, Nsukka

I really was nervous as ever as the hunter and I strolled down to the house I fled from weeks ago. I never imagined I would be returning so soon. Yes I was scared as hell and if not that it was something I had to do in order to know my real story I wouldn’t have accepted taking the risk.
The time was exactly 2:15pm when we got down at the last bus station before trekking down to the house.

Surprisingly I noticed that the hunter was kind of familiar with the village. Even though I was in front of him, I couldn’t help but notice that he walked with great confidence as if he had been there before. Nevertheless I paid no much attention to it because he was a hunter and had possibly been in almost every part of the state.

In no time, we got to my old home and were very lucky to meet my adoptive parents at home. In fact they were about having lunch when we walked in on them. You can’t imagine the shock on their faces. They were extremely surprised to see me, but then seeing the hunter with me kind of heightened their surprise.

‘’Ogbu Agu (killer of lion) what a surprise’’ my adoptive father screamed as he sprang up from his chair, leaving me totally stunned.

‘’Dike my friend, what a long time” my companion (the hunter) screamed with the same tone. I speechlessly looked on as the two men shook hands before facing me.

‘’how on earth did you find her?. The girl ran away from my house ooo for no just cause’’ my adoptive father asked my companion who shrugged.

‘’it’s a long story my brother. I saved her life once again like I did nineteen years ago’’ he replied while my heart froze with disbelief.

‘’yes you heard right. I was the person that brought you to this house nineteen years ago. Unfortunately your parents died under my watch, under my carelessness’’ he added softly while cold shiver ran through me.
I almost fainted. The shock was just too much. But I managed to get hold of myself because I knew a long story was coming.
A story that could shape my destiny and give my life a meaning.

‘’tell me who do you suspect. Be free with me’’ I asked the terrified girl who wiped her eyes and stared at me with hesitation.

‘’at first i suspected it was Martha but I changed my mind after she begged your mum on my behalf. She’s the reason I’m still here. She stood by me and now I suspect no other person than your fiancée Jane. She’s the one that reported the stolen items to your mum and she equally has access to every part of the house. She’s been nice to me though but I believe it was just to cover up her true feelings because she has caught us together many times and perhaps wants to get rid of me in order to protect you. Forgive me for speaking so freely’’ she breathed while I drew back a little as I slowly recollected how angry Jane was when she reported the issue of the stolen items to me. Isadora’s theory made a bit of sense but I still had my reservations nevertheless.

‘’you can go now’’ I managed to stammer as I wondered if it was good questioning Jane about it or not. I however ended up not questioning Jane and simply allowed the matter to die because I felt it was for Isadora’s best interest. Questioning Jane who could end up making things worse for her.

I really was glad Val showed signs of believing me. He never questioned me further and instead asked me to leave the room. I knew reporting his fiancée wasn’t really a cool thing to do but I had no choice. Moreover she was the only other person that really would have wanted me to leave the house perhaps due to my closeness with him.

The rest of the weekend sped by without issues. Jane on her own part kept her distance even though she appeared nice whenever we ran into each other, making me a bit doubtful if she actually was the one that set me up or not. Due to that I was extremely careful with everything I did in the house and tried my best to avoid mistakes. I equally made up my mind to ask for Val’s help in tracking down my real family and everything about me. My adoptive parents never cared to help me and I believed with Val’s help I could make a breakthrough. I made up my mind to seek his help.

But unfortunately for me as I left the house on Thursday morning to get some provisions down the street on Jane’s request, a car slowly stopped in front of me. And as I drew close, the driver got out of the car and smiled at me, like a young man waiting to woo a girl. Actually that was what I felt he wanted to do and so didn’t give him much of a look but as soon as I tried to walk past him, he grabbed me from behind and blocked my nose and mouth with his hand, making me sniff something that left me totally unconscious.

I woke up minutes later to find myself inside a car trunk. I couldn’t believe it was all happening. I couldn’t believe I could be abducted in broad daylight in such neighborhood no matter how lonely it was. I prayed. I cried. I begged God to help me.

After what seemed like an eternity. The car trunk was thrown open and the same young man stood before me smiling evilly.

‘’oh dear, I just wish I had enough time to enjoy your body before taking you to the afterlife. Please don’t take it out on me but you should have remained in the village instead of coming to this city. See what it got you? A prize on your head’’ he muttered and laughed while I tried to talk but couldn’t because my mouth was firmly tied with a piece of cloth. I needed no one to tell me my fate. I couldn’t help but notice that we were in a forest. I knew no one would miss me and it kind of brought more tears in my eyes.
Slowly the young man carried me into the vast forest, walking deep inside. There wasn’t any way anyone would think of searching for me in such a place. And for the fact that he allowed me to see his face, I knew nothing would stop him from killing me.

After walking for what seemed like an eternity, he threw me down, pulled out a pistol from his pocket and loaded two bullets into it.

‘’I’m sorry that you have to die this way but I think its better you leave this world now than to continue suffering. I’m doing you a big favor’’ he breathed, smiled and pulled the safety while I closed my eyes.

‘’kpoooaa’’ a single rang out. My heart froze as I urinated on myself but then I felt no pain. I felt nothing. I opened my eyes to see the young man on the ground. His left hand was bleeding. I couldn’t help but wonder what happened as he quickly staggered up, looked around fearfully and fired two shots into the forest before disappearing and leaving me behind as if he saw a ghost.

For some minutes I couldn’t understand what was going on until an old hunter appeared with a smile of satisfaction on his face. He was holding an old Dane gun on his right hand.

‘’young lady I just saved your life’’ he breathed softly while I closed my eyes and thanked God, including the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Val’s side of the story continues from the last scene of the previous episode

‘’who the hell is Charles?’’ I asked with a slightly raised voice as I stared at Isadora with great disbelief. Of course she appeared shocked to see me and I equally couldn’t believe she left me at the room to make a mystery phone call to Charles. I thought she was hundred percent faithful to me. My head couldn’t help but come up with lots of silly explanations. Of course I was busy with my work when she left the room but it never stopped me from noticing how hurriedly she left and after waiting few minutes for her to return went out in search of her, Only to find her screaming Charles on top of her voice.

( I didn’t catch up with her on time to get details of her conversation with the guy but I was on time to hear her scream the name “Charles”)

    ‘’like seriously Val?’’ she breathed,

    ‘’alright Charles is my boyfriend.
Are you happy now?’’ she added, sighed and headed back to the room while I quickly followed her. There was this way she gave her reply that made it look as if I questioned her wrongly. Attitude girls are good at displaying.

‘’so tell me who is Charles and why did you have to go outside to make your call?’’ I asked again as soon as we got back to the room.

‘’I never knew you are the jealous and monitoring type val. Charles is my boyfriend nau’’ she playfully answered, fell on the bed and watched me, smiling broadly.

‘’stop playing with me. Just tell me the truth’’ I demanded strongly. Of course with the way she replying, I felt Charles wasn’t really who I earlier thought he was.

‘’you men are something else. I left the room to make my calls in order not to disturb your work and what I get in return is suspicion. I thought you trust me?. Alright Charles is my mother’s mechanic. He was supposed to pick up my car today for servicing but he failed to. I was angry when I called him because your mum made me angry. I spoke to her first’’ she slowly narrated while I sat on the bed and stared at her curiously.

‘’how did my mum make you angry?’’ I asked

‘’I discovered that some of my jewelries were missing when we got here hours ago. I reported the issue to her. She took it up and discovered that the new girl stole them including some of hers. I demanded she throw the thief out but she refused, saying she already gave her a second chance which got me pissed. I can’t share the house with a thief’’ she narrated, leaving me totally stunned with the story. I painfully stood up and headed towards the window to look out. I couldn’t believe Isadora was a thief. The poor innocent looking girl I had feelings for. It really broke my heart very much that I couldn’t even concentrate on anything else that day.

Isadora’s side of the story continues

I had a very sleepless night as I wondered who was really behind the set up or should I say theft that left me totally embarrassed. I knew even though I was given a second chance that I would still be seen as a thief. I thought about Val and tears instantly appeared in my eyes. I knew the story would eventually get to him and I couldn’t imagine how he would feel or relate to me afterwards. My heart really was broken. It pains to be wrongly accused.

Early the next morning, I went to Val’s bedroom to clean it up. I started from the wardrobe where some of Jane’s bags were kept. The lady really brought in lots of her belongings to the house, occupying two rooms even though she was yet to get married to Val, something that left me stunned. As I slowly took out the bags to clean the wardrobe, an old picture fell out of one Jane’s bags, gaining my attention. I quickly took the picture and stared at it with interest. It was a family picture taken about twenty or more years ago because Jane was barely standing on her feet. However something else caught my curiosity and it was the second couple in the picture, standing beside Jane’s parents. The man looked a bit like Jane’s father and his wife wore an old school pendant that looked exactly like the one I had with me. The pendant I was told was for ‘good luck’ which my mum wore on my neck before her untimely death. I was told perhaps it was the pendant that saved my life.
( I always had the pendant with me but no longer wore it because it was kind of big and very old school like).

Yes I wasn’t supposed to have any ideas because of the pendant I saw on the woman’s neck because they really could be gotten anywhere in those days and probably the woman was having difficulty having kids like my mother and had to wear it. But then no matter how hard I tried to discard the faces in the picture, I found myself thinking about them over and over. I had this great urge to keep the picture but the fear of being called a thief again, held me from taking it.

I badly needed to know who my biological parents were and how they looked like.
