                          DIANA 

I smiled when I saw the family reunite. It was a great happiness to see that boy that I met on the streets finally has a home to live in. A home where they will love him no matter what.

But on my own side, I guess my only home is with Aunt Rita. She is the only one I can trust and love, not even my mother.

“Diana.” Somebody called from outside the ward and when I looked there I saw Caroline.

“What do you want?” I said storming out in anger.

“Baby please listen to me. I am sorry.” She said in tears.

“Don’t even get started with me. You have gotten what you want with Elisha. The money, losing your child, hatred from everyone including your own blood.”

“Diana.”

“I shouldn’t be the one you are apologizing to. You have been doing that for a very long time now and when I thought I should have a reason to forgive you, because you are my mother, your true self finally showed me you aren’t worth anyone to love you.”

“Because of you, you left me with Aunt Rita, because of you, Isaac’s father is dead and he was on the streets for 20years, because of you I almost died of poison, because of you Mom fell in love with John, because of you Enoch is dead! It’s all your fault! Because none of this would have happened if you stood with father when things were hard.”

“I can’t blame him if he has a family somewhere else now and has the money to cater for them. The patient dog eats the fattest bone. I don’t want to ever see you anywhere near me, because I never want to be like you!”

“I hate you and regret having you as my mother. I wish the table turned and the barren one is you, while Aunt Rita is my real mother. All this wouldn’t have happened, you know why?”

“Because she isn’t driven off the edge by material things.” I said in anger.

“How dare you talk to me like that?” She said raising her hand to slap me and before it landed on my face someone held her back.

“Don’t you dare touch my daughter.” Father said pushing her back.

“Father.” I said happily hugging him and he kissed my head.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

“I heard the rumors. I had to rush down here to see if you and Isaac are okay.” He said shooting mother a disappointed look.

“I am fine but Isaac isn’t. He just lost his brother, and Caroline’s husband is the cause of it. He tried to kill me and Enoch took it instead.” I said and his eyes widened.

“What?” He said and we both looked at her.

“Jacob don’t even start acting like the saint you aren’t. Help me talk to Diana, I can’t lose her.” She said.

“At least I ain’t the devil here. When you took my daughter away from me,I begged you! I begged you to stay but you were already blinded by the money Elisha had.”

“I knew things would go wrong, but he killing our daughter, is one thing I didn’t expect at all. You should be grateful he didn’t succeed, cos I would kill your children one by one right in your presence.” He said angrily.

I was shocked seeing him that way because I have never seen him get so angry. I looked at Caroline and I saw she was equally shocked.

“Go away. We don’t need you here. You have done enough damage.” Father Said holding my hand.

“I will go. But I need you to know I love you. I love you so much Diana, and I love you too Jacob.” She said.

“Oh please, don’t tell me that.” He said and she ran out of the hospital in tears. I turned to father and hugged him letting out all the tears on him.

“At least the devil is gone. We can now have peace of mind.” I said in tears.

“She is still your mother Diana. You should find a place in your heart to forgive her. I know it won’t be easy, so I give you time.” He said and I sighed nodding.

We both looked inside the ward and I saw Isaac looked happy with his family. The father Daniel too looked like the happiest father on Earth.

“,Who is that?” Father asked.

“Isaac’s stepfather.” I replied with a smile on my face.

 “Hey Diana. Come in.” Isaac said waving to me and I smiled walking into the ward. 

“You are my sons girlfriend.” Daniel said and I nodded smiling.

“I am so happy you two met each other. He has told me many things about you, starting from when you first met.” He said and I nodded.

“I don’t regret having Isaac in my life Sir. Though when he came in good and bad things from my family happened to him. I will still love him, I will love him forever.” 

“I am just scared that it may not need mutual, not after what my family did to him and his brother.” I said bowing my head in tears.

“Hey. C’mon you know I can never hate you. You are not your mother, the lady I am in love with isn’t driven by material things because she fell in love with a street boy who also ate garbage. I love you and will always do. You gave me a life when I had no one.” He said and I rose up my head.

Tears filled both of ours eyes and we hugged each other weeping.

I stared at Mrs Danielle as she laid on the bed, her eyes were still shut and my eyes were still very heavy due to the excess tears dropping.

I kept staring at her until her eyes opened, she turned to look at me and I smiled.

“You are awake. How are you feeling?” I asked and she looked around.

“I fell unconscious.” She said and I nodded.

“Hold on! Where is Enoch!” She yelled trying to get up but I stopped her.

“Mrs Danielle I am so sorry, but Enoch is gone. And I think Issac knows who did it.” I said and her eyes widened.

“You know? Who is it?” She asked and I sighed.

“You don’t want to know. It’s not yet sure.” I said and she sat up at all cost.

“Tell me who did this to my son! Where is Isaac?” She asked.

“It’s uncle John. He was sent by Caroline’s husband to plant it in my drawer and instead of me taking it, he took it.” I said.

“Elisah did this?” She asked in tears.

“He didn’t mean it to be Enoch, he meant it for me.” I said bowing my head.

“Why? Why is he after you?” She asked.

“I am yet to find out. Isaac is at the police station, we are trying to lure Uncle John to mom, so she can make sure he doesn’t leave town because he knows Isaac knows.” I said and she grabbed her hair.

“I don’t still Understand why he would want to do this to you. You aren’t even staying with them, Caroline doesn’t even show she cares, why would Elisha try doing this to you?” She said and I shook my head.

“I don’t know. But I need to talk to mother, she must know something about this.” I said.

“Why would Caroline know something? You are her daughter.” She said.

“She doesn’t care about me! If she did she would have shown concern after I got back from the  hospital, but she never showed.”

“She never had me in mind. She loves only her children from Elisha, I am a no body to her. But the most annoying part of all this is that Uncle John agreed to all this.” I said.

“What would he gain? How did he even know Elisha at the first place?” She asked.

“I don’t know, but don’t worry Danielle. We would get to the root of all this. Uncle John, Elisha and Caroline will pay for this.” I said angrily.

“But that doesn’t change the fact that Enoch, my son his dead. How do I tell his father? He isn’t even in the country.” She said in tears.

“We would find a way. I am so sorry Mrs Danielle.” I said hugging her and she met crying on my cloth.

                      Ma’am Rita 

I kept pacing, waiting for John to come in. I was trying so hard not to cry or anything, I had to act very nice if I want to keep him here.

It wasn’t even easy talking to him on the phone and smiling, so as to cover the shock and disappointment in my voice.

After few minutes, I saw John approaching from the other side, through my transparent walls. Immediately I sighted him, I began to breathe very fast. 

“Omg John.” I said in tears as he barged into the shop.

“They are gone. They just ran off and….” I said stammering. 

“I am so sorry Rita. Those guys won’t go Scot free for this.” He said angrily clenching his fist.

“Do you know them?” I asked.

“I think I do. And I think they want to get to me through you.” He said and I furrowed my Brows.

“Why? You are not a trouble maker.” I said and he sighed holding my hand.

“You aren’t sure Mary. I am on a edge, and I am just so happy you are safe.” He said hugging me and brushing my hair.

“John you love me right?” I asked and he nodded.

“I do Mary. I swear on my parents grave.” He said and then I was happy he brought out another topic.

“Your parents? You never talked about them to me.” I said looking into his eyes. I felt so disgusted but I had to put the act on.

“They were killed terribly. Couldn’t bring myself to remember it.” He said.

“Why are you telling me now?” I asked.

“Because I need you to know that I never meant to hurt you or anyone. I was on the edge, my parents were killed by my boss cos they were debtors and I am still indebted to him.” He explained.

“Who is the boss? I don’t understand anything you are saying John. What is going on?” I asked and he sighed.

“Mary I am leaving. I know I shouldn’t but I have to. I tried to kill Diana.” He said and I moved back in shock.

“You did what??” I asked in terror.

“My life was at stake, and yours. I was sent to you by Elisha to make you fall in love with me, but everything changed. I fell in love with you.”

“My parents were indebted to Elisha, they borrowed money from him when I was young and close for dying.”

“They weren’t able to pay up on time, and Elisha being who is he, killed them and took me in. He began to use me for his works until he brought me to your path.”

“I would have just ran away, but he would hunt me and try to kill me. When I failed at the party, he sent me to do the same poisoning operation again but giving Diana a chocolate, but I guess Enoch took it.” He said.

“Enoch ?? How is he??” I asked in tears. 

“He is dead. And it’s all my fault, I should have just said No to him, but I was been a coward. I didn’t want to die, not after I fell in love with you.” He said and in anger I slapped him very hard on his face.

“How dare you! You almost killed my daughter and now Isaac’s brother is dead! Because of you!” I yelled.

“I know I should suffer for this, and that’s why I am telling you all this! Because I love you. I could have just ran away but I couldn’t leave without seeing you. That’s because my feelings for you are real.” He said.

“Enough! Stop! Just stop John! I was imagining a life with you, a great Wedding, adopting a beautiful baby and then to find out you were sent to me?” I said and was about talking when we began to hear the sirens.

“They are hear for me.” He said looking around.

“Yes they are. And this is for breaking my heart.” I said giving him another slap.

“I am happy, that at least I will be free from Elisha.” He said and I began to shed tears.

                    ISAAC 

“Diana you should call mother now.” I said lifting Enoch over my shoulders. I rushed out of the house and Diana followed behind with her phone.

“She would be at the hospital as soon as possible.” She said and I nodded stopping a taxi.

“The nearest hospital.” I said placing Enoch gently at the back before sitting. Diana too the front seat.

I placed his hand on my laps, his shirt was stained with his blood and so was mine. I tried so hard not to cry because I was tired of crying.

“He will be fine Isaac. Your Brother will be okay.” Diana said from the front seat and I nodded smiling, holding his face in mine.

“Diana if anything goes wrong with him, I swear I will kill anyone behind this.” I said in anger and she nodded.

“Don’t worry. Nothing will go wrong.” Diana said.

We got the hospital and I climbed down the car with Enoch in my hand. Diana ran into the hospital to get the nurses, and they came rushing to us with a stretcher.

They placed him on the stretcher and pushed him inside with great speed. I followed behind them and when they got to the Emergency Unit, I was stopped.

“Please let me in.” I said to the nurse staring at Enoch as they pushed him in, putting some tubes on him already.

“You can’t go in.” She said entering the door.

“He is my brother and he needs me right now. I have never being there for him before, please let me be now.” I said and the nurse paused.

“Get a garment. And a glove.” She said pointing to the right side. I saw the robe and gloves, I picked them up and wore then in haste, including the hair cap.

“You are not to go close to him during the operation. Maybe your presence would help him fight stronger.” She said and I nodded.

“Thank you so much Nurse.” I said looking back at Diana.

“Don’t worry, I will be fine here. Go help your brother.” She said smiling and I nodded walking into the ward with the nurse and she drew the curtain over the door.

“Stay here. The lights are dim here, you won’t be seen on time. Please don’t come out of here, I am not supposed to do this but I had to seeing you that way.” She said and I nodded standing at the corner.

“Thank you so much.” I said with my eyes fixed on Enoch. The nurse left my side to Enoch and they began to do their thing.

More tears dropped down my eyes as I watched him lay lifeless and totally unhelpful on the bed. And the most annoying thing is that I don’t know what to do to help. I was as useless as Enoch.

I kept my watery eyes opened staring at them. There was a monitor next to them. It had this sound that I really didn’t understand but the doctors were calm with it. So I guessed it wasn’t a bad thing.

I cleaned my tears and looked up again and this time the doctors were looking restless. I wanted to go to them but then I knew that I would be jeopardizing the work of the nurse that helped me.

I watched him carefully and when the noise from the Monitor changed I was so scared and wanted to grab him and hug him not to go but I was stock, I couldn’t.

Soon, they began to hit his chest with some sort of….. I don’t know. It raised him up severally but his eyes were still shut.

Then the noise of the Monitor changed and this time it wasn’t a beeping down. I sighed in relieve and just when I thought everything was okay, they pulled up the cloth over his face.

“Wait!! What is going on!!! He won’t be able to breathe well. Let him go.” I said running to Enoch but they held me in the process.

“You are not supposed to be here.” The doctors said.

“Does that matter now? The cloth should be at the neck or chest level, not here! He won’t be able to breathe.” I said in tears.

“Get him out of here.” They said and two of them grabbed me and moved me out.

“Let me go! I need to see my brother!” I yelled in tears.

“Isaac.” I heard someone call. I looked back and then I saw Danielle in tears.

“Mother.” I called running to her and hugging her tightly.

“Mother they covered his…. His face… With the sheet…. I told then he won’t breathe well but they…. Chased me outside.” I stammered in tears.

“Isaac calm down. I know you were terrified, but don’t worry. It will be fine.” She said moving my hair backwards and kissing my forehead.

“Where are the parents?” The doctors asked interrupting us.

“I, it’s me.” Mother said.

“Let’s see in my office.” He said and I shook my head.

“No she is not going to the office. I am his brother and this is my girlfriend, we are all family. So let’s get this over with.” I said and mother nodded for him to go on.

“Ma’am your son ate a poisonous chocolate. It was a very concentrated one, half of his inner part was damaged before you brought him here.” He said and tears rolled down our eyes.

“So what happened?” I asked in a shaky voice trying not to freak out.

“We lost him.” He said and I began to gasp trying to process what he said. 

“You what?” Mother asked moving down slowly.

“Mom!” I yelled grabbing her.

“She is unconscious Isaac.” Diana said in tears. 

“Do something!” I said grabbing the doctor. The nurses Came out and took her into another ward.

“I am going to kill him!” I said running out of the ward.

“Kill who!” Diana asked but I ignored her.

“What made you follow your mom here?” I asked looking at Enoch. I really didn’t trust all he said. A devil can’t just change over night.

“I had a change of heart. Mom talked to me last night.” He said and I looked at Mrs Danielle who was staring at us.

She smiled as I looked at her and I shifted my gaze to that of Enoch.

“You can’t fool me Enoch. One can’t just wake up the next day to have a pure heart.” I said and he smiled making me a little nervous.

“I know I have been a d**k to you and Isaac Diana. But I will try to change, I just feel bad doing all those things to you.” He said and I narrowed my eyes looking at him. It was very weird.

“Okay. Let’s see.” I said and he nodded smiling.

“So mom. Do you know Mrs Danielle?” I asked as I noticed they kept stealing glances of each other as Enoch and I talked.

“Oh yes. No.” They both chorused leaving me in confusion.

“Mother replied no, while Mrs Danielle said yes. Can I know what is going on?” I asked furrowing my brows.

“We were friends. Not anymore.” Mother said and I looked at Danielle.

“Don’t you think it’s time to forgive each other Caroline? You paid me back in the most painful way. Can’t we just end this at once?” Mrs Danielle asked.

“Of course not. You’re the cause of all this.” Mother replied and I looked at them like they were crazy.

“Mom what’s going on?” I asked Aunt Rita who just stared at the both of them.

“Can’t you just stop the drama till later? Diana is sick.” Mom said and they looked away.

“Mom do you know anything about these?” I asked and she sighed holding my hand.

“Diana you should rest now. We will leave.” Mom said and mother stood up storming out of the ward.

Mrs Danielle and Enoch also walked out. 

“Mom.” I called and she smiled.

“Ignore them. Best friends drama.” She said and I was shocked.

“They were best friends?” I asked and she nodded heading out of the ward leaving me to my thoughts.

What could have happened? Why do they hate themselves so much now?

                ISAAC 

They all came out of the ward and I saw anger on Mrs Danielle face, and also that of Mrs Caroline.

“What happened?” I asked and they all went silent.

“What Happened?” I asked walking into the ward fearfully to see Diana staring at the ceiling.

I sighed in relieve when I saw she was still fine.

“What happened with the two mothers?” I asked sitting next to her.

“I really don’t know but I wish to know. Mom said they were best friends and then I guess something happened and they hated each other.” She said and Immediately I recalled what Danielle told me at the party.

“Now I get it.” I said.

“What?” She asked.

“Danielle said they were pretty close before, but then your mother did something that didn’t seem right to her, and then they became enemies.” I said and she sighed.

“What do you think mother could have done? I need to find out.” She said and I nodded.

“I will do that. All you need to do is rest Diana. You shouldn’t worry about adult problems.” I said and she laughed.

“I am glad you are here now.” She said and I planted a kiss on her lips.

“I should start the investigation job again.” I said and she shook her head. I walked out of the ward and then I heard Mom talking so I waited to eavesdrop.

“Can’t you at least act matured in front of the children? Caroline you have done enough havoc to Diana, and I bet when she hears this she would never ever like you.” Mom said and I furrowed my brows.

“What is she doing here in the first place? Showing concern after destroying my plans?” Mrs Caroline asked.

“Your selfish plans Caro. I did the right thing by telling Jacob. You were just using him, I never told you to let go of your daughter.” Danielle said.

“It’s because of you I had to let her go. If you didn’t run your mouth, I would still have my daughter with me. And Elisha wouldn’t hate my daughter.” Caroline said.

“At least you paid me back with evil. You made my life miserable.” Danielle said in a shaky voice.

“Enough both of you! You are still in the hope. Can’t you say all these when you get home? This is the last thing Diana wants to hear right now.” Mom said and they became all silent.

I then opened the door and walked out. Immediately they saw me, they put on a fake smile. Danielle had tears in her eyes but she quickly cleaned it off.

“Are you okay?” I asked and they nodded very fast.

“Yes we are. You know, adult issues.” Mom said and I nodded walking away.

“I need to understand all those things I heard. And I am sure Danielle will tell me everything. I need to meet her alone.” I thought.
