Gradually the people began to leave, but some of them waited for the return of Aguyi including Nina and Ajuwe.

After about 25minutes he eventually returned with his sword filled with blood. He also had with him the finger of the princess with which she wore the royal ring given to her by her father. When the people saw this, some of them wept, some of them murmured, while some of them were glad. At that point, Nina carried the prince who was wailing uncontrollably.

King AZAZA: I have defended my land, I have defended my people, let it be known round all of the realms that anyone or village who threatens our land will suffer the same fate that EKEH has suffered. Let it be known that king AZAZA will spare no one. Call me any names you wish, ”king AZAZA the merciless. King AZAZA the evil. King AZAZA the wicked. Whatsoever you wish, I still remain your igwe and my word is still law”

    And the crowd chorused ”igweeeeeeeeee”

Prince Nnamdi who was standing far from the scene shook his head in disbelief, this is not the father he used to know. He wondered what had transformed the king into this ruthless and mean person. Nina and the Prince cried even more as the king spoke and NINA was filled with hatred for him and those that cheered for him.

Ajuwe managed to take them home.

Nina : I failed her, I failed my Queen, I failed my princess.

Ajuwe: you are just a child, you did your best my child, its not your fault.

Nina: I made a promise to my queen right before my igwe, I promised to take care of them. And now she is dead, my princess is dead. ( she started crying again. And after a while she called out to the prince.) My Prince, come here, listen I promise you from this day, that I will die first before I let any harm come to you. I promise you. I will return you back to our land and you will avenge all these deaths, I promise you.

Ajuwe interrupted her and stopped her from talking more.

Ajuwe: Firstly Nina my child, we can’t keep calling him Prince, because it will raise suspicions. and so from today you have to rename him.

Nina kept quiet and thought for a while before answering, he turned to the Prince and spoke to him eyeball to eyeball.

Nina: My Prince, listen carefully, there are people out there who are determined to kill us all as long as they know we are from EKEH. So for that reason, I will no longer be calling you my Prince, from this moment, I will call you IKENNA. It doesn’t mean that you are no longer the prince, do you understand?

    IKENNA: Yes Nina.

Nina: Also, do not tell anyone that we are from EKEH, you must keep that to yourself. Do you understand me?

IKENNA: But what do I tell them if they ask?
Nina became quiet, but Ajuwe quickly replied the Prince.

Ajuwe: Tell them you are my sisters children, you and Nina, and that you are from AKATOR village. Do you understand?

    IKENNA: Yes I do!

Ajuwe: you must not talk about your parents or the princess to anyone, do you understand?

    IKENNA: Yes I do.

Nina: EKEH will get her revenge and one day we will return to our land and possess that which is truly ours.

King AZAZA could not sleep that night, he kept seeing himself kneeling down before the princess with his hands and feet tied. And then he kept seeing the Princess give an order for him to be beheaded. Twice he screamed from his sleep before he finally decided not to sleep anymore.

In the morning, he had his council of elders gathered, and then he sent the town crier to announce that the people should gather at his palace.

When Ajuwe heard this, she quickly ran inside to inform Nina. They carried the boy and changed his clothing’s and hurried to the palace. Ajuwe had cautioned Nina not to speak to anyone. When they arrived at the palace, a small crowd was there. Everywhere was silent you can hear a pin drop.

Prince Nnamdi didn’t understand why his father had called for this gathering, he kept pestering him to tell him why, but the king insisted that he will hear at the gathering. And so he followed him and sat beside him as he took his seat on the throne. Nina and the Prince kept stretching to see if the princess was there. The warriors of OKU were all present with their families. Finally the King spoke.

King AZAZA: People of OKU, I greet you, as we all know a lit has happened in the last few days. A village and its people who planned on attacking and killing us and stealing our gold was attacked by us and defeated by us. (there was a round of an applause as he continued)
I am the king of this land, and it is my sole responsibility to protect this land and all your lives, (he pointed to all of them), I will not take the slightest threats against you easy, I will defend you and tour properties……(once again the people shouted and clapped) during this war, some persons condemned my actions and so I have gathered you to ask all of you, should I have waited for the opposition to attack and kill you first before I attacked? And the people chorused, ”nooooooooooo”. The igwe continued,

King AZAZA: Yesterday when our warriors came back from battle, they came back with a little souvenir, a little girl and the only survivor from the land of EKEH, there have been a small controversy over her matter, we do not know if to let her go or to do what is needful. There have been a little disagreement over her issue and so I have sent for the chief priest of the land to come and talk on this matter. Whatever he says that is what we will do. Chief priest please come forward.

(The chief priest came out with his body full of charms and ordered that the princess be brought out. Some of the warriors went behind the palace and brought the little girl out. She was looking worn out and tired from lack of food and water, when Prince Nnamdi saw her, he jumped up in surprise, Nina wanted to run out but Ajuwe held her back, the Prince started crying and Ajuwe took him from Nina and urged him to keep calm, there was mixed taking among the people)

Prince Nnamdi: Father what is the meaning of this? Who is this little child and why is she tied up like an animal? (The king ignored him and urged the priest to go on with what he was doing. The priest moved round the princess three times singing some incantations before he started talking)

Chief priest: igwe, this little girl has a strong heart. She will achieve great things in life, BUT there is one thing I see all over her.

King AZAZA: what do you see ezemoi?

Chief priest: Revenge! I smell revenge all over her. She has not come to this land to eat and dine with you. She has not come in peace, she has come for REVENGE, and that Revenge she will bring with lots of pains and blood on your land.

King AZAZA: so chief priest what is your advice.

Chief priest: igwe, I have told you what the gods told me, whatever decision you make now is on you and you alone. (He turned and he walked away).

Chief: Igwe, what advice do you seek again, you’ve heard from the mouth piece of the gods. She has to die? We will not wait to see the prophesy come to pass would we?

Prince Nnamdi: (talking to the chief who just spoke) What nonsense are you vomiting from your mouth. Can’t you see she is just a child?

Chief : but my Prince, it is a child that grows to become an adult!

Prince Nnamdi: of she were your child would you speak like this? (The chief kept his head down and Nnamdi spoke to his father)
Father please this time be wise in your decision, this girl is just a child, please spare her and let her live with us, when she grows under our watch she will love us if we teach her right and she will know only right. Please my father.

King Azaza: Nnamdi, you are obviously still a child. (Then he signalled the warrior head to come forward.) People of OKU when there is a problem the wise thing a man should do is solve it. When a problem is quickly solved it prevents future damages. And so with this I have decided that the little girl be taken into the evil forest and beheaded. (The people shouted, Nina and the Prince were wailing, while some were happy that the king is wise, Nnamdi was surprised at his father, but the king ignored him) You must come back after killing her with proof that you have killed her. We will be here waiting

Prince Nnamdi: No father, this is so wrong.

King AZAZA: shut up Nnamdi, this is my decision and I am the king.

Prince Nnamdi: I will not be a party to this. (He stepped out of the palace.
The warrior head ordered Aguyi to carry the girl to the forest and do what the igwe had asked. Aguyi didnt like that he was the one called, but then he couldn’t object, so he carried the girl once more on his shoulder and walked away from the palace. The princess say NINA and her brother who were crying so much at this point , she smiled at them, and with courage in her voice she shouted. ”EKEH will get her reward. This land will pay” a big slap in her head from behind and she passed out. Some of the villagers were crying and feeling sorry for her. Ajuwe dragged Nina and the boy from the place straight home. It was a horrible day for them all.

The maid followed the warriors into OKU village. She wanted to see and know where they are taking the princess to. At a point the warrior head stood and turned back, and the warriors asked him what was wrong. He told them that he felt they were being followed, and after looking round for a while they continued.

The villagers on seeing them greeted them. Some were excited to see them, others were frowning their faces at them but they still greeted. There were murmurs among some old women and men, some were pointing at the little girl that AGUYI carried on his neck but no one dared to ask any question. The warriors proceeded on their way to the palace, with the maid running and hiding behind. And just about four more huts before the palace, the warrior head ordered them to stop.

Aguyi: what is it this time?

Warrior head: we are being followed.

    Aguyi: I thought you’ve said that before….

Warrior Head: This time, I’m certain, we are been followed.

Aguyi: But who will dare follow a group of warriors coming from battle and at what aim?

Warrior Head: relax Aguyi my friend, we will soon find out.

With this he turned and started walking backwards with his eyes rotating round and round in search of whoever or whatever was following them.
The maid was terrified, she couldn’t run. And there was no good place to hide. And the warrior head was approaching her direction. She knew this time she would be caught and if she is caught she will be killed, so she decided to step out instead of waiting to be caught. Buy just as she was about to do so, she saw a woman open the room to her hut and signalled her to come in quickly. Without thinking twice the maid ran into the hut and shut the door.
The warrior head looked round the whole place and saw no one.

Aguyi: Have u satisfied yourself now? Please can we just ho to the palace, I have a wife to return to.

Warrior Head: I still don’t understand this, I could have sworn that we were been followed.

Aguyi: thank the gods you didnt swear, now let’s go.

And they all proceeded to the igwe’s palace. The igwe and some of his cabinet were sitted. The warriors knelt down and greeted the igwe.

Warrior Head: Long live the king. Igwe we have gone to the land of EKEH, and we have done that which you ordered. King Obama, his wife and all his people are dead. Not a life was spared, and no property was conserved!

King AZAZA:And the little girl with you? Who is she?

Warrior Head: This is the only survivor of EKEH kingdom, the only daughter of king Obama. We don’t know how she managed to escape from the village during the war. But we caught her why she was still running. Her brother the Prince and heir to the throne of EKEH, is already dead. We do not know what to do with her hence we brought her back for you the igwe to decide.

Princess: So you are the king who ordered that my father and mother be killed, the gods will jot spare you.

King AZAZA: shut up you insolent brat. (Turning to the warrior he said) take her to the back of the palace and tie her there until I decide with my chiefs what to do with her.

Warrior Head: yes igwe. (Turning to Aguyi) follow me .

And they took the princess to the back of the shrine and tied her down. As they left, Aguyi turned and looked at the little girl once more. He was surprised at her bravery and how she could talk to king AZAZA. No one in the village dare soeak out when AZAZA coughs and yet this small girl talked back at him. He admired her bravery and strength.

Warrior head: Aguyiiiiii, what are you thinking of? I thought you said your wife was waiting,

Aguyi: of course she is (he replied as he turned and walked away)

The elders and king AZAZA sat and deliberated on what to do with the little girl. Majority suggested that she should be soared since she was just a child, but a few suggested that she be killed along side with her parents. Amongst them was chief Obi, a known wicked man in the village but best friends with the king because of his ability to bring gossips and stories to the igwe.

Chief Obi: Igwe, it’s not like am not having human sympathy o, or I don’t know the girl is just a child o, but you see children like this, they carry grudges for long, see the way that girl spoke to you our own igwe some moments ago, it shows that she has a tough spirit. Do you think if you keep her alive she wouldn’t hate you? Or want to avenge her family in the future?
Igwe I would say we kill her for your own safety o, and that of your children and this village at large. That girl is a viper and we one day strike if we don’t do anything right now. (As he spoke he made more sense to the igwe then those who suggested that the princess be spared) and so once again king AZAZA made up his mind to kill the princess by midday the next day.

He would make the announcement in the morning. He dismissed the elders and went straight to his room, he knew his son NNAMDI will want to oppose him and right now that was the last thing he needed.

Princess: wait, wait, please wait, I am tired, I am thirsty, I can’t run anymore, I want water.

Maid: My princess, please just a little farther, we cant stop now.

Princess: But I’m tired, I can’t go further, I need water.

Prince: Even me, I need water.

Maid: Okay let’s rest for a while, before we continue. Maybe we will get water on our way.

But then the prince began to cry, from the look on his face, one could see he was really dehydrated.

Princess: Aunty we ran past a stream a while ago, I saw it when we were running, why don’t we go back and drink from there.

Maid: my princess, its too risky, we can’t go back. We have to keep going forward.

Princess: But I really need water, and my brother needs water too.

    Prince: Yes! I need water

The maid thought for a while and then decided to go back and get water for the children. But just as he was about to leave the Prince started crying, he didnt want her to leave and the maid didnt want all of them to go together. But he didnt want to let her go and since she didnt want the princess to go alone she decided to let the children follow her.

When they got to the stream, the had enough water to drink and set on their journey. The maid carried the Prince and asked the princess to walk as fast as possible.

While they were going, the princess saw an empty keg on the ground and picked it up. ”I could fill this keg with water ” she thought to herself, and without telling the maid she ran back to the stream to fill up the keg with water. The maid had gone a little forward before realizing that the little princess was not with her.

Maid: my princess, my princess, she shouted and ran back towards the stream.

Meanwhile princess had already filled the keg and was running back to the maid and the prince. Just as she was running, she tripped on a wood and fell on a small pit, she let out a loud cry. As she was struggling to stand up, a big hand pulled her out from the pit. The maid already got there but immediately she saw them she kept quiet and his behind the bushes pressing her hand against the mouth of the Prince.

Warrior Head: Young girl who are you and what are you doing in these part of the bush.
The princess was terrified, because she knew and recognised them as OKU warriors. The same people they were trying to run away from.

Princess: I I I, I I came to get water. She said raising the keg of water on her hand.

Just then the warrior saw the royal ring that king OBAMA had given to her…

Warrior Head: aha! So its you, guys, he called out to the other warriors. ”guess who we have here?”

The rest of the warriors gathered around to see what their head was talking about.

Warrior Head: its the princess, daughter of OBAMA, handed over into our hands by the gods themselves.

One of the warriors, looked at the little girl in surprise and asked. ”This is the princess we have been chasing? But she is just a child.

Warrior Head: Yes Aguyi, she is just a child.

Aguyi: Princess how old are you?

Princess: I am seven years old.

Aguyi turned to the head warrior and said, ”so you mean we have been chasing a seven Yeats old child?

Warrior Head: shut up Aguyi. The order was to wipe out every living thing from EKEH, be it an adult or a child. Then he turned and face the princess. Young girl, where is your brother?

Princess: please don’t kill me, I beg you. She started crying, she has seen the maid and the prince hiding, and she has sewn the maid shake her head in the negative as a sign for her not to tell them anything, and this made her cry the more. Please don’t kill me, she kept on begging.

Warrior Head: I will not kill you, infact I will take you to our igwe and you will live in the palace like the princess that you are, and even your brother will be well taken care of, just tell me where he is.

Princess: my brother is already dead sir.

Warrior Head: what do you mean? What are you talking about?

Princess: he didnt leave with us, one of the maids carried him and his in one of the rooms in the palace, before we left, I saw your men set that room on fire, so my brother is already dead.

The warrior head looked at her for a while and ordered that they bring her along with them back to the village.
It was Aguyi who carried her on his shoulder and they turned and walked back to the village. The maid who was hiding all this while, watching the whole scenario, carried the Prince and followed them behind. Her heart was shattered, she was scared, she didnt know what was going to happen to the princess. She lamented why the princess go back to the stream.

Prince: Will she be okay?he asked her

Maid: I don’t know my prince, I really don’t know.

She held him close and walked silently behind the warriors, hiding at intervals from being seen.
