Shackles Of Tradition – Episode 9

Ngozi came running out of Adanna’s bedroom in tears.

She met her husband seated in the sitting room deep in thoughts and she went down on her knees in front of him.

” Nnayi please allow them get married. I don’t want to lose my daughter please!”

” Ngozika are you even hearing yourself…? I should allow our daughter get married to an Osucast…? Do you not know what that will mean to our family and how it’ll affect my ambition to be the next Onukwo of this land…? Eh..?”

” I know Nnayi but if you think about it these Osucast are human beings too. They deserve to be treated like normal beings worthy of good things and not castrated like wild animals!”

” That’s why there are referred to as Osucasts and we the free borns” Mazi Ebuka said shrugging his shoulders

” Is that all you have to say…? Tell me Nnayi would you be happy if you were in their shoes and you are being rejected or discriminated in your own village…?” Ngozi asked staring at her husband Mazi Ebuka who heaved heavily.

” I will not feel happy Ngozika but then I am not the one who invented such a tradition. Our forefathers did and we as the descendants just has to abide by it!”

” I disagree Nnayi. We need to do something about changing it instead of folding our hands to watch innocent generations suffer unnecessarily”

” So what would you have me do…? My hands are tied. I don’t yet have the power to change anything so there’s absolutely nothing I can do Ngozika!”

” Nnayi you hear what the native doctor said earlier right…? Our daughter will d!e in one week if we do not get her married to the man she took a bløød convenant with. Our daughter is on the verge of losing her life and we can’t just watch her d!e simply because the man she loves turns out to be an Osucast.”

” I don’t know what to say Ngozika. If I am an Onukwo now then there’s a possibility of doing something to change tradition and the mindset of the people about the Osucasts. My coronation is suppose to be in a month time but this Adanna’s issues is about to disrupt so many things. I might even lose the seat!”

” Something just has to be done Nnayi. My daughter can not remain in that state…please Nnayi do something!”

” Stay calm Ngozika. Stop being dramatic. You and I know that Adanna will not remain that way…you were there in the bedroom when the native man said that she will be awake by evening. I’m tired so quit the drama and let me rest from all the problems your daughter has already gotten us into”

” I..I..I..I..I…am scared for our daughter’s life. As a mother I don’t know what will become of me if I lose one of my children. I know she did what she did out of childish ignorance. Yes! Ada made a mistake but you don’t have to throw away the dirty water along with the baby. Please do something quickly Nnayi. pl.e.a.s.e” Ngozi pleaded with her lips quivering terribly as tears begun cascading down her eyes in torments

Mazi Ebuka sighed upon seeing his wife’s broken state. He is the kind of man who dislikes seeing his wife either sad or in pain of any sort.

He loves his wife dearly hence her tears is more like his weakest point and Ngozi surely knows how to maximize this fact.

Adanna was now awake and came in to hear her father’s last words which got her overly overjoyed.

She is somehow feeling grateful to the gods for the way things turned out, at least it assisted in softening her father’s heart towards Emeka her boyfriend.

” It’s okay Ngozika. Stop crying please. I’ll find a way to do something about the current situation at hand. It will be difficult to change the mindset of our people over the Osucast system but I’m willing to give everything a trial for your sake and that of our daughter. You know I hate seeing you cry…so don’t cry anymore” Mazi Ebuka replied calmly as he used his palm to wipe Ngozi’s tears.

“…I’ll ask Emeka to come and see me so we’ll talk like real men. I need to know if he is truly worthy of my daughter like you people paint it and then we’ll take it from there” Mazi Ebuka said calmly and Ngozi smiled genuinely from her heart.

” Thank you Nnayi. Thank you so much. I’m sure our daughter will be very happy when she hears this good news by the time she wakes up by evening” Ngozi replied smiling unaware that Adanna is already at the door listening, and indeed she is feeling very happy.

In the morning of the next day as Mazi Ebuka had promised, he sent for Emeka and they begun talking. Mazi Ebuka is awed at Emeka’s intelligence and doesn’t need a soothsayer to tell him that his daughter had indeed chosen rightly.

Nevertheless, he still has his fears concerning Emeka’s traditional class as an Osucast.

Due to this, an heavy sigh escaped his mouth before he could stop it.

” You look worried sir. Anything the problem…?” Emeka asked anxiously

” Emeka I don’t have a problem with my daughter marrying another man beside Prince Obinna. My only problem now is that you’re an Osucast. My reputation and the social welfare of my family is at stake if I accept you as a son in-law!”

” Sir, those traditional beliefs are old-fashioned. I believe the two class demarcation should be eliminated and not practiced in this recent times again. People need to be enlightened that Osucasts are human beings with the same blood as the freeborns running through their veins…hence everybody should be considered a freeborn being and treated fairly without any form of injustice or discrimination!”

” I understand your point Emeka but as it stands now..my hands are tied. And if I decide to go contrary to tradition..I will lose the favor of the royal family and that includes my seat as the next Onukwo” Mazi Ebuka said calmly and paused to exhaled before continuing

” …my son you are a man like me. Adanna and her mother may not really understand but as men we both know that it is easy to convince one person like what you’re doing now…but when it comes to a crowd of villagers who are neck deep in customs and beliefs…it’s going to be tough! I’m actually afraid because the possibility is very slim!”

” I still don’t understand where all this is going Sir. Please is there something you’re indirectly trying to tell me…?” Emeka asked hoping that what he is thinking isn’t what it is going to be

” Find someone else and get married to. Emeka there’s no doubt that you are a fine young man…very intelligent and well groomed but I still can not give my daughter to you in marriage” Mazi Ebuka dropped the bombshell

” Ah! But why not sir…? Am I not eligible enough for Adanna…?” Emeka yelped

” It is out of my love as a father that I can not dare to expose my first seed to the negative effects that comes with being a wife to a rejected class in which the people despise a lot!”

” I promise that I will always protect your daughter Sir. I am even making plans to relocate with Adanna and my mother to the city after my marriage to her. I understand your fears but I’m begging you sir…please give me a chance with your daughter please”

” If you relocate with her to the city…do you think that it ends there…? What then becomes of us her family that is over here…? Have you thought of the stigma and trouble this will cause us..?”

Emeka went mute unable to give a response. Mazi Ebuka had to continue

“…escaping a problem is not the best way to tackle it. You tackle a problem from its roots to ensure that it doesn’t resurface in future. I’m sure your mother has already explained to you what your father went through simply because he had chosen to marry her…?”

” Yes sir she did!” Emeka simply replied not having anymore strength left in him

” So is that the same fate you want for Adanna my daughter…?”

” No sir but then I love her. We had even taken a bløød oath together and separation is not an option for us now”

” Don’t worry yourself about the oath. The native man confessed to me that there’s a way out of all this. He says that I should come see him by noon and he will let me know what needs to be done. I didn’t tell Adanna and her mother because I still wanted to have a man to man talk with you! Emeka do you really love my daughter like you claim…?”

” Of course Sir. I love Adanna very much!” Emeka said with renewed hope until he heard Mazi Ebuka’s next words

” Then let her go! Emeka let Ada marry a freeborn like herself instead of exposing her and us as her family to the negative impacts of being married to you as an Osucast! let my daughter go…will you?” Mazi Ebuka asked looking at Emeka daringly, making him utterly unsettled.

” I don’t have an option there Papa. Emeka and I took a bløød oath before he went to the city on a scholarship…and if I go contrary to the convenant we had then I’ll either end up m@d or déâd!” Adanna finally broke the heavy news as she released the breath she was holding

” What do you mean by you and that Osucast boy took a bløød oath…?” Mazi Ebuka asked looking at Adanna fiercely

Adanna remained silent seeing the frightening look on her father’s face. She jerked when her father shouted saying

“…Adanna as an intelligent girl I want to believe that you won’t be that foolish to gamble with your future. Ada please me tell that this is one of your childish jokes…?”

” I’m sorry Papa but it’s the truth. I took an oath with Emeka as the only man I want to spend the rest of my life with. I really do not care if he is an Osucast or not! I love Emeka very much and what matters to me is our future together. Papa I want to marry him regardless of the traditional boundaries!” Adanna replied leaving her father in shock

” Wow! I’m just realizing that you’ve been charmed Adanna! My ënëmíes have finally succeeded in getting to me through my daughter. I’ll sure deal with them and by the time I am done with them…they will understand why I am known as the Mazi Ebuka of this village”

” There’s nothing wrong with me Papa. I am very alright…nobody chārmed me!”

” I don’t think so Adanna. You’re surely chārmed and it’s definitely my ënëmíes at work. They want to dent my image and tarnish my ambition to be the next Onukwo of this land…but then I’ll make sure their plans for my family fails!”

” I still insist that I am very fine Papa. I’m not charmed nor are your ënëmíes using me to get to you. I’m just following my heart…that’s all Papa!”

” Adanna you may keep denying it but I am very convinced within me that you’re charmed. I mean it’s not enough that you took a convenant with a rejectee boy who is an Osucast…today you want to add to the list of your mistakes by marrying him and you claim you’re not charmed…? Wow!”

” Papa I made no mistake choosing Emeka or taking that convenant with him. For the gods sake! I am of age to make my choice of the man I want to spend the rest of my life with and it is certainly not Prince Obinna!”

” Okay lets assume you’re right. So Adanna the choice of the man you made is none other than an Osucast…?”

” I loved him Papa even before I knew about his status as an Osucast and I still love him. Love they say conquers it all!”

” Stop this madness Adanna! I’ll overlook the past and pretend that none of this ever happened. All I want you to do is to break off whatever relationship you have with that boy and his family. Forget your past with him and marry prince Obinna. Face your bright future!”

” I will do no such thing Papa. Didn’t you hear what I said earlier…? Emeka and I are inseparable because of the bløød oath that binds us together forever!”

” Shut up Adanna! You’re my daughter and I’ll not allow you put your hands into a fire that will burn you alive. Do you think at all…? Or wait! Do you want all of us to live in extreme isolation and be referred to as Osucast relatives..?” Mazi Ebuka exclaimed and then took a deep breath to calm his nerves. He continued but this time in a calm voice

“…see my daughter if the oath is what you’re scared of then don’t worry yourself about it. Trust me as your father I’ll run around and find a way to set you free. Ada, you will not d!e neither will you run m@d. You’re my daughter and I Mazi Ebuka will find a way to  bring you out of the convenant that binds you two. Just allow me handle it!”

” That won’t be necessary Papa. I want to be with Emeka. I love him so much!”

” Adanna tell me the truth…what exactly have I done as a wrong to you such that you’re hellbent on destroying all the hard work that I’ve spent years to build…? Do you want to bring down all the efforts I have put into becoming a prominent man in this village…? Talk!”

” You’ve done nothing wrong to me Papa. It’s just that I am currently twenty seven years old. I am now an adult who is old enough to make certain decisions for myself with or without your validation so grant me my choice Papa!”

” Ada I’ll never approve of that choice of yours so you have the liberty to either change it in peace or in pieces!”

” Well Papa I will do no such thing. So you are free to do your worst Papa!”

” What do you mean by that Adanna…? Are you trying to dare me or what…?”

” I’m sorry Papa if you choose to see it that way but then I really love Emeka. He’s my choice of a husband and I’ll marry him whether or not you approve of him. If it’s not Emeka I’ll simply stay single forever and that’s my final decision Papa!” Adanna said and angrily stomped out of her father’s presence.

Mazi Ebuka kept ranting for Adanna to come back and stand before him but she was far gone. He is boiling in ánger and thought to himself that he is going to disgrace Emeka and his only family in such a way that they will never forget.

After Adanna ran out of the house, she went straight to meet her mother at the backyard.

Her mother; Ngozi was plucking pumpkin leaves when her daughter came and stood before her fuming

” Adanna why is your face looking that way…? Don’t tell me that you and your father… I heard  you two usual banter about your marriage to prince Obinna…? What is the issue…?” Ngozi asked out of concern. She stopped plucking the leaves in other to focus her full attention on looking at Adanna

” Talk to your husband Mama. I have made my choice of a man and unfortunately that man isn’t Prince Obinna whom he has chosen for me. Emeka remains the man I love and I’ll marry him whether he likes it or not!” Adanna said and was about walking out on Ngozi when she begun feeling dizzy.

The dizziness made it seem like the world was rotating around her and Ngozi who noticed her change in demeanor had to ask her worriedly

” Adanna are you okay…? What’s wrong with you..why the sudden dull face…?”

” I’m fine Mama. It’s just the stress of today that is taking a toll on me. I’ll be going to my room now! Just help me and talk to Papa please!” Adanna pleaded as she took another step forward to walk out of Ngozi’s presence

Just at that moment the dizziness became worst, Adanna’s eye begun closing as she lost her balance and weakly slumped to the ground.

Seeing this scenario, Ngozi was abruptly alarmed. She ran to Adanna’s side amidst her several screams and wailings which alert the occupants of the house.

” Adanna! Adanna! Adanna! Somebody should help me ohhh!. Nnayi please come out! Our daughter is dying ohhh!”

” Ada..my love are you sure this is what you truly want…?” Emeka asked to be sure his ears weren’t deceiving him and indeed he heard his girlfriend correctly.

    Adanna wants a bløød oath!

” Yes my love. Lets have a bløød oath, that’s the only way we’ll both be rest assured of our love and commitment to each other no matter the long distance or years we stay apart” Adanna answered with a serious look on her face. Obviously she isn’t joking at all.

” I know my love but I don’t think it’s reason enough to do what you’re requesting of me. We just need to put our minds into staying committed and I’m sure we’ll scale through…it’s as simple as that!” Emeka exclaimed with displeasure boldly written on his face

” Emeka, you think waiting for you to come back for me in the next four to five years is as easy as you make it seem…? I’ll be over twenty eight years of age by then and as a woman I’ll have to remain unmarried in my father’s house. I know it isn’t right but I still need to be sure I’m not wasting my time waiting for you!” Adanna blurted out ângrily and the displeased look on Emeka’s face slowly dissolved and he spoke gently this time.

” I know Ada but..but.. you remember the warnings of our ancestors against taking bløød oaths…don’t you think it will be too extreme to go that far…? Ada please think this through because honestly I don’t feel good about this at all!” Emeka said hoping that his words will help in changing Adanna’s sense of reasoning but she remained adamant.

” I’m serious Emeka. That’s the only way I can permit you to accept the scholarship offer from the missionaries which will eventually take you far away from me. If you don’t agree to having an oath with me then I’ll take it as though we are officially breaking up…” She stopped to take in a deep breath and then continued talking

“…After that I’ll go on and accept one of my many suitors here in the village and move on with my life…while you do same over there in the city!” Adanna concluded folding her hands stubbornly

Emeka stared at Adanna as he contemplates whether to listen to Adanna and oblige to her desires or he shouldn’t do it.

Honestly, he understands her fears perfectly because he also loves Adanna very much and wouldn’t want to lose her neither does he sees a future without her in it.

Emeka sighed heavily as he finally decided to give into Adanna’s request. After all, he equally needs the bløød oath as an assurance to be sure that he will also not be wasting his time holding onto their relationship when he’s away from the village.

” It’s okay Ada. You’re right…four to five years isn’t a joke. I equally need the reassurance as much as you do so yes! I’ll take the oath with you” Emeka said sincerely and Adanna beamed widely as she jumped on him in a passionate hug.

” Thank you so much my love. After we take the oath I would have loved you to have my body as the only man in my life but I know you will not do it because of your strong faith in the God of the missionaries…you won’t want to sin as they call it” Adanna said smirking shyly and Emeka bursted into a loud laughter

” You’re right Ada. I’ll never do that particular one even if you are to strip yourself in front of me. I love you and I’m willing to wait for the right time. Your body has never been the reason I love you…I hope you know that right…?”

” Of course my love. I love you too and I’ll keep my body for you as my future husband for as long as it will take… Emeka let me start looking for something sharp so we’ll take the oath before we forget” Adanna said frantically looking around for any sharp object she can use to pierce her finger.

Adanna’s eye continued searching around where they stood but she couldn’t find anything sharp aside the dry leaves littered on the ground.

She became frustrated and Emeka who could see the pensive look on her face decided to proffer a solution.

” You should calm down my love… remember tomorrow is still another day..? We can use today to go back home and carve out a sharp object from anything strong…then we can meet here again tomorrow evening and take the oath together.. isn’t that okay by you..?”

Adanna heaved heavily as she nodded vigorously to Emeka’s idea. She stopped searching and fixed her gaze on Emeka

” It’s okay Emeka. Your idea isn’t so bad..I like what you’ve said, so like you’ve suggested we’ll meet here tomorrow evening and have the blood covenant…” Adanna replied inaudibly

    Emeka sighed heavily.

He is actually grateful for the little time he’ll have to reflect and really think things through thoroughly to be sure he will be making the right decision.

“..so tell me my love…what are your plans by the time you reach the big city…? You know that I still do not understand what the scholarship thing is really all about” Adanna said turning her back to relax comfortably on Emeka

” Well according to Father Moses, one of the missionaries here…he said that the scholarship is for my education though I don’t really understand what he means by education but I believe it’s something good. So I’ll just follow the instructions I’ll be given by the time I get to the city” Emeka said shrugging his shoulders

” Okay but what about your feeding and where will you be staying all the while you are going to be over there…? I am worried for your welfare Emeka” Adanna said softly with worry laced in each of the words she uttered

” You do not have to be worried my love…the missionaries assured my mother and I that they have it all covered. They mentioned something like I’ll be staying at a school hostel though it still sounds strange to me…as for my feeding the said that the scholarship covers all of that in the place I’m going..” Emeka said as he paused to inhale and exhale before he continued his words

“…I love you Adanna and I’m promising you that I’ll study harder over there so I’ll come back for you soonest and make you mine forever. I want only you to be my wife in the nearest future my love!”

Adanna nodded in understanding and did not say anything else.

She is quiet and thinking of what life without her boyfriend Emeka is actually going to be like. She’ll miss him for sure.

It’s sad because all their lives they’ve done practically everything together.

Undeniably, their closeness and genuine love for each other has attracted lots of enviable eyes.

Either from men who felt that they were more deserving of Adanna than Emeka, and from maidens who felt they were a better option for Emeka than Adanna.

Almost everyone in the village was aware of their relationship but funny enough, amongst their two families it was only Emeka’s mother who knew about them as a couple.

This is simply because for all the three years of their relationship together, they had managed to hide their relationship status from Adanna’s family whom they know would never approve of Emeka marrying their daughter because of his poor financial status and many other things.

And now after everything they’ve had to endure to get this far, she is supposed to stay without Emeka for years..?

Oh! It stings Adanna badly and has her thoughts running wild in distress.

As for Emeka, his mind was unsettled about what lies ahead of him after he leaves the village he has lived all his life to an unknown City.

He is going to miss his widowed mother and wonders how she’s going to cope without him around to protect her from his father’s self-centered relatives.

    As for his girlfriend Adanna…?

Emeka is going to miss her a lot, the fun memories they’ve created together is going to haunt and have him missing her all the time.

So how is he going to cope over there without having Adanna with him…?

In Emeka’s mind, he is equally wondering if it is a good idea to venture into what Adanna is suggesting that they do tomorrow before he leaves to the city.

Is it really a safe decision to take the bløød convenant with Adanna..?
