    WHEN A WOMAN CHEATS
    When A Woman Cheats – Episode 22

    .
What sort of mother would honestly not
want to hear my side? How many times had
I gone to her crying over the abuse? How
many times had she ignored the bruises on
my body. She called me an adulterer. Yes I
had cheated but I had my reasons.
     I had
tried to explain that the reason I had
cheated was because I found love.
     A woman
cheats not for vengeance but because she
    has connected with someone emotionally
and has fallen in love. A woman cheats
when she has closed the door to her heart
for her other partner. I wanted her to
understand but she had shut me out.

I realised that for my mother I was just a
means to a good life;an investment and it
was my prayer I never became that to Alex. I
knew my father was probably turning in his
grave knowing that his wife had turned her
back on her only child. I turned to head back
to the house and then stopped. There he
was standing there. He had this look. A look
I had seen once. A look that had made me
feel a bit of attraction to me. He moved
    forward.

He was in cargo shorts and a white tight t-
shirt. His feet were clad in flip flops making
me look at my bare feet. I loved the feel of
the ocean under my bare Feet. He reached
me and then reached out his hand. A stray
strand of the peruvian that I had plaited was
in my eye. He psuhed it back.
    “New look?” He said.

    I smiled. “I wanted something different,” I
    said suddenly feeling shy.

    He grinned. “You look good.”

    “Thanks.”

“Your wonderful second in charge told me
    where to find you.”

I laughed at his description of Rosy. She
    could be quite protective.

“How long did it take you to get her to
    reveal my location?”

“Long enough. I had to convince her am not
    here to kill you.”

I laughed. He smiled then looked over my
    shoulder.

“The sunset is beautiful…it is worth it.”

I looked over my shoulder as the sun dipped
into the ocean. “It surely is.”

I turned back to him. He got my hand and
pulled me closer. Without warning he
plantes his lips on mine. I didn’t resist. Part
of me had expected it. It wasn’t explosive
like Oscar’s kisses but it was sweet and calm
but full of emotion; unspoken emotions.
He pulled back and looked searchingly into
my eyes. “I have wanted to do that for years
but I owed my loyalty to Caleb. Despite all he
did and was he was good to me once.”

I nodded but didn’t take my eyes off him.

“Caleb is dead,” he said after some silence. “I
came to get you for his funeral and to
    prepare you for the backlash.”

    “Diane?”

“She is behind bars. Thanks to some well
connected people. She was caught as she
was trying to forge Caleb’s signature on a
false will that she and Bupe wrote.”

    “Bupe?”

He nodded. “He was her accomplice when it
came to dealing with Caleb. She promised
him a cut of Caleb’s wealth.”

I looked at him in confusion.

“Bupe helped Diane get juice extractes from
them and stored it somewhere far and well
on days that Diane wasn’t home to
administer the poison he would add it to
    Caleb’s water or drinks.”

My heart sank. I felt a shiver pass through
me. I would have been dealt with realisation
hitting me had I not left as per instruction.

Diane was ruthless and I had no idea that I
    had never seen that.”

“Bupe sang like a canary when the experts
lied to him that Diane had confessed that he
    wa behind the whole thing.”

“How did you connect him to it all?” I asked
    curiously.

“The housekeeper mentioned to me that she
had seen Bupe sneaking around to see
Diane on a few occassions which raised my
suspicions so I told Edward….he is an old
aquaintance. He helped organise the right
    people.”

    “Poor Caleb,” I thought.

“Yes, poor Caleb. Now let us head back. We
have an early flight tomorrow. As the widow
for the late Caleb Chibuye your presence is
    expected.”

    I then walked to the
reception and requested to see Doctor
Chibale our family doctor. I saw him ten
minutes later. He checked my blood pressure
and other vitals before asking about my
appetite and sleeping pattern. I told him
sleeping was a problem and he told me it
was to be expected. He asked if ai was
taking my folic acid and ferous which I
admitted to. He then asked me to take it
easy and reduce my salt intake as my BP was
    a bit high.

After the meeting I hurried to the bathroom
and locked myself in. I then pulled off the
afghan top and slipped on a blue maxi dress
and then placed the wig on my head. I
shoved the top into my bag and changed my
shoes and slipped on sandals. I hurried out
of the bathroom.whilst praying that no one
would recognise me. I hurried outside and
without glancing at my car I hurried to the
entrance and hoped I would find a cab. I
was in luck and I jumped in. I gave the drive
directions to the person I was going to see
in Matero. I dropped off and hurried into the
house without glancing behind. I had text
the man earlier and he met me at the door.

He quietly handed me the fake documents
and ai transferred the money to his account.

No word was spoken. I walked out and then
hurried out into the streets where I found
another taxi.I jumped into the back and
removed my sim card from the phone and
chewed it. I then reset the phone and asked
to be dropped at Katondo street. I managed
to find someone to buy the phone at a
thousand. Using that money I went into a
    salon/barbershop and asked the barberman
    to cut my hair.

I had to look.like the woman on the
passport photo. He then dyed the hair
maroon and I had to say the results were
amazing. I loved the new look. I then
headed to pep and bought myself a suitcase
and some warm clothes. I paid cash then
hurried to the atm to get some cash. After
that I went to the train station. I knew if
Caleb were to search for me after finding my
car he would start with planes and buses.

He would never dream of checking on the
train. My new name was Mubanga Musonda.

I paid for a ticket on the sleeper couch and
then hurried to levy mall for some food to
eat. I had thirty minutes before the train left.

I was heading to Tanzania. I had no idea
what I would do there but I knew once out
of Zambia I would be safe.
I looked out the window as we left Lusaka
behind. My heart wept and I touched my
tummy; hoping and praying that my child
would forgive me and most importantly
Oscar. I hoped he would understand I was
just doing this to protect him and everyone
else. I had already sinned and putting more
people’s lives in danger because of my
infidelity was not right. I prayed that I would
be safe and that my life would pan out. I
closed my eyes and allowed my mind to
replay the passionate moments that I had
    spent with Oscar. Under different
circumstances I would have loved to be his
wife but that wouldn’t be. I was married to
Caleb. I had gone against all my teachings. I
was reaping the results but no one else
deserved to suffer with me. Even though it
hurt I prayed Oscar would find someone
and he would fall in love and eventually
    forget me.

    .
    .
    DAWSON
Your best friend indeed is your worst enemy I thought as I ran
a hand through my hair. I was having a bad day. Basically I
was remorseful over so many things. I had once enjoyed my
friendship with Caleb so much not until I realised that he was
just keeping me around so that I get to do him favours. Yes,I
owed him. Hadn’t he saved my mother from jail? Hadn’t he
been the master mind in covering up Dad’s death? Part of the
reason mum and I were estranged was not just the abuse she
put up with but the fact that she killed Dad. I always felt that
she should have taken him to the cops ages ago but now
looking at Kassie’s situation made me realise that at times
women were pushed to the extremes when the Law didn’t side
    with them.

I slowed the car down as I neared the lodge where Caleb was.
He had called me to pick him. I knew he was with Diane. I had
known about their affair for a whilr and I felt rotten for having
kept yhe whole thing from Kassie but when you are being
blackmailed what do you do? Hadn’t he shown me the extent
of his influence when he had made me lose an account. That
had been the point at which I wanted to leave his house but he
had stoppes me. He had basically thrown the whole spy thing
    at me.

“Kassie trusts you so find out what you can,” he had said.

    “And if I refuse?”

“Prepare to lose another account….and by the way don’t forget
what I did for you and your family.”

I hit the steering wheel in frustration as I thought about how
manipulative Caleb could be. I jad always considered him a
real friend. I wish I hadn’t come back to Zambia. I wish I
hadn’t fallen for Kassie. Falling for her made me risk my whole
life and business to help her but I knew we would never be
together so I had gracefully bowed out. Having Alice call me
about Diane snooping through Kassie’s phone had given me
the Idea to expose her. I was basically cutting off one threat
    to Kassie.

I got my phone and dialled Caleb’s number.

    “Man, I am outside.”

“Give me ten minutes,” he said before cutting the line
I leaned back in my seat and let my mind wonder again. I had
decided to concentrate on Thandi to forget Kssie and allowing
Oscar back into Kassie’s life was my way of punishing my
treachorous heart. I saw Caleb walk towards me after a few
minutes with Diane trailing behind him. He placed his suitcase
in the back while Diane jumped in without a word. She rarely
spoke to me. She thought she was better than me.

“How is Kasamba?” She asked with a smirk.

“She is fine,”I responded without a care and started the
Ignition once Caleb was seated next ti me.

“That pregnancy is making her glow…I wonder who the father
of the child could be,” she added.
I was watching her through the rearview mirror. She was
looking at me directly. Caleb’s silence meant she must have
said something to him concerning me. Diane was that much of
    a snake.

I shrugged. “I am yet to find out who the guy is,if there is a
    guy.”

She rolled her eyes and looked out the window. The rest of
the drive back to her place was wuiet and I was glad when
    she dropped off.

“Diane tells me you and Kasamba were in constant contact
during their outing,” Caleb said in a displeased tone.

“Yes, I text to let her know I would be home late and then I
had to call her again to remind her not to get home too
late….what is the third degree all about? Have you started
doubting me? You gave me a job to do and I have been doing
just that. Keeping you and your guy updated on Kassie,” I said
    seriously.

He looked away and I knew he was processing what I was
saying. We drove home in silence, each lost in our own
    thoughts.

    KASAMBA
Looking at Diane’s betrayal made me realise that this whole
thing had become all about survival. She wanted me gone.

She was willing to do whatever it took. I wouldn’t put her past
witchcraft if she could but then again she needed to play by
    Caleb’s rules. I still couldn’t believe that a woman I had
brought into my life, my home and loved like a sister was
actually the one who was planning my downfall. I had asked
Oscar to avoid seeing me for a while as I didn’t want Caleb to
    cathc us.

I absently rubbed my tummy as I gazed out the garden. I was
tired of sitting at home and doing nothing. I picked my lemon
tea and sipped it as I let my mind wonder. I had been
researching on slow poison. One had really interested me and
that was spider venom. Slow poison. I was inclined to kill
Caleb now and acting like the sorrowful widow when indeed I
was the black widow. I had never considered killing anyone
but with all that was happening round me I felt I had no option.

    “Deep in thought?”

I turned to find Dawson standing by the door. I smiled.

    “Planning.”

He moved forwward. He had brought Caleb home early and
my dear husband was now fast asleep. I could smell Diane’s
perfume on him and knew without a doubt he had been with
her. Somehow the thought of not having his filthy hands on me
    comforted me.

    “Planning on?”

I picked up my tablet and handed it to him. He stared at the
article that I had been reading on spider venom, basically black
    widow venom.

“There is a man in Germany who is an expert on the poison. I
am thinking of skyping him and speaking to him.”

Dawson sighed and then sat next to me. “Do not think of
    killing,” he said quietly.

I looked at him in surprise. “The other day you said we needed
    to get rid of Caleb.”

“I did but that didn’t mean we should kill him….your idea of
disappearing is better. Trust me having blood on your hands is
one experience you should avoid. It will haunt you forever and
    change something within you.”

He spoke as though he had experience in that area. I could
hear regret and a slight sadness in his voice.

“Find the best way to leave…Caleb will pay for his sins one
    way or the other.”

I nodded as his words sank in. I was shocked when he out his
    hand over mine.

“You are not alone. I will help you and you have Oscar, a man
who loves you intently and is willing to lay his life down for
    you.”

I smiled then continued looking out to the garden.

“Consider your earlier idea of faking your death…the guy
watching you has to be duped. I can help you plan your death.”
    “What do you suggest?”

“An accident…body burnt beyond recognition. I know a guy
who works in the morgue. He can give us one of the
unclaimed bodies….we just need to find a way to ensure that
your DNA is found on that burnt corpse.”

I turnes to look at him. “I guess we have a lot of planning to
    do.”

“Indeed we do. In the meantime I am leaving lest I be accused
    of being your lover.”

He stood and started walking away before he paused.

“Your friend is trying to make your husband think am your lover
and somewhat he bought into it. The best thing to do now is
to communicate via skype. We need to create a group and
plan carefully, from the accident to DNA to fake IDs and the
    country you will flee to.”

I nodded. I watched him leave before turning back to my
thoughts. What Dawson had said made sense and knowing he
was willing to help me hatch my escape plan made me happy.

He sounded like he knew what he was doing and I hoped he
did. If this worked then I would be free from Caleb. Maybe just
maybe I would have a chance to raise my child without fear.
For the first time I smiled genuinely. I had always fancied life
in South America. Maybe Venezuela or the dominican republic.
Then I needed funds. I had to be smart and start stealing
some money from Caleb. I sighed. I had loads of planning to
    do.

Dawson’s attitude towards me suddenly changed after that
encounter. He seemed to have appointed himself my
protector. He was careful not to let Caleb know that he was
aware of the abuse and that suited me well as I was terrified
of the consequences. I still couldn’t help but wonder as to
how I missed the signs. We were once so in love, so perfect
    and the envy of everyone.

Each time I saw a post of someone being abused I felt sick to
my stomach and the comments from people on social media
just made it worse. Most did not understand the struggles we
would go through;the guilt of wondering if only you as a
woman had done things differently then maybe just maybe I
wouldn’t get abused. The other thing people didn’t understand
was the shame that came with being abused. Some would
sympathise with you but others would actually tell you to hold
on;that all women got beaten in marriage.

I sighed as I packed my stuff. I had been subjected to a long
day. Oscar had insisted on working with me and at one point
had dragged me to a seminar on financial strategies in
organisations. I couldn’t help but wonder why he was insisting
on spending much of his time familiarising himself with my
department when we had other departments. It had actually
not escaped people’s attention. My assistant had actually told
me that people were convinced that we were more than we
were letting on. That had actually made me even more aware
of my surroundings and whatever little fantasies I had about
Oscar had been pushed to the back of my mind because he
was not only my boss but a colleague and business was never
    to be mixed wit pleasure.
I locked my office and headed to the car. I needed to get
home before Caleb. Lately I dreaded going home because ever
since he was elected permanent secretary he had been
pushing for me to quit my job. I was not willing to do that as
the job I had was the one thing that I had for my own. I
unclocked the car and turned the key but the car wouldn’t
start. I tried and tried again but to no avail. Frustrated I got my
phonr and steppes out of the car.
Mine was the only car in the parking lot as most people
usually left by five on the dot. I dialed Caleb’s number and
after a few tries he finally picked up.

“My car is failing to start,” I told him.

“I see. Well I am not around. I flew out to Livingstone this
    afternoon,” he said dismissively.
In the background I swear I heard a girl giggle. I wouldn’t have
put it last him to be with another woman wherever he was as
he was the type of man who believed that he was allowed to
have as many women as he wanted.

“I had no idea,”I said quickly.

“It was an emergency trip. I got busy and forgot to inform you.

However I will call Dawson to come and pick you. I will not
have any other man drive you around.”

Emergency my foot. He was probably rushing for his latest
rendezvous with whoever he was with in the room. I told him
to take care and that I would wait for Dawson. I had just hang
up when I felt a presence behind me. I turned and there he
was. His jacket was placed on one arm and the first three
buttons of his white shirt were unbuttoned. I could make out
his torso. I swallowed. He smiled lazily as though knowing the
effect that he had on me.

He stepped towards me. Taking a step back would mean I was
a coward and honestly I didn’t want hom to think that his
    presence affected me in anyway.
“You are still around,”he stated in his deep husky voice.

“Car trouble,” I said as I told my racing heart to calm down.

    “Can I take a look?”

“By all means?” I said as I pointed to the car.

I watched him as he took long strides to the car. He tried the
bonnet but it wouldn’t budge so he opened the driver’s side
and flicked open the bonnet lever. He then placed his jacket
on the seat and rolled up his sleeves. He then opened the
bonnet and hovered over the engine. As he bent over I
couldn’t help but notice how good his behind looked. He must
have felt my eyes on him as he looked over his shoulder with
a mischievious smile. I quickly looked away.

“I think it is the timing belt. Was it recently replaced?”he said
    turning back to the engine.

I shook my head and answered in the negative. I had no idea
what he was talking about. Caleb normally took care of the
    vehicles’ maintainance. He stood straight.

“You need to call a mechanic to look at the car.”

“I will inform my husband,” I said quickly.

He raised a questioning eyebrow. It was my first time ever
mentioning a husband. Before I could say more the sound of a
car approaching us made me turn. It was Dawson. Oscar
    looked at me then Dawson.

    “Hubby?”

    “Friend. Apparently he has travelled.”

He walked to my car and picked his jacket and as he did
Dawson got out of the car.

“Kassie what happened?” Dawson asked as he eyed Oscar
    suspiciously.

“Timing belt,” Oscar answered. “That is why the car won’t
    start.”

“Thank you for helping Kassie out. I will take it from here. Get
your things,” he said pointedly looking at me.

I nodded and opened the door as the two men sized each
other up. I then locked the car and walked to where the two
stood. Both were giving each other nasty looks.

“I am ready to go,”I said clearing my throat. I then looked at
    Oscar. “Thank you.”

He nodded. He then bid us good night and walked away. I
then followed Dawson to his car quietly. I jumped into the
passenger seat and strapped on my seat belt.

“That guy likes you,” Dawson said causing me to look up in
    surprise.

“I doubt it,” I answered quickly.

    OSCAR
If I had to say I was disappointed it would be an under
statement. I felt cheated. I had no idea that Kasamba was
married. She wore no ring on her hands and she had this
innocence about her and if that wasn’t bad enough the way the
“friend” looked at her showed me that he was interestes in her.

I went home and poured myself some scotch before I went to
the home gym to punch away on the punching bag. I needed
    to blow off steam.

That night my dreams were hauntes by Kassie’s face. In my
dreams she kissed me and it was as real as the day that ai
kissed her at the party. I had kissed a total stranger at the
party just to get rid of the girl my aunt had thrown at me. She
had been a pest and had been following me around for days
till I saw her;she was seated on the patio alone. She looked
radiant and totally breathtaking. The kiss was never plannes
and the minute our lips met there was this electricity.I had
been so taken with the kiss and seeing her at work just made
    me happier.

Now my hopes of wooing her were crushed but something just
wouldn’t let me be. I woke up early the next morning and left
before anyone else was up. I drove for work and just as I was
driving in I spotted the Human Resource Director’s car. An
idea came into my head. I walked over to her after we parked
and I asked her to send me Kassie’s file.

I then locked myself in my office and studied her file. I
googled her husband’s name and discovered that he had
recently been elected Permanent secretary. I studied pics of
him and Kasamba. There was somethinf about her smile in all
the pics. It seemed forced or sad. I leaned back in my seat
and wondered what sort of a man she was married to. Was
she happy? Did he make her heart flutter? I closed the laptop
as I looked away. I had to tell my heart to forget her one way
    or the other.
