                            . Joseph’s pov.

    ~

“Happy birthday sweetie” Kathleen smiled at Joel who seemed like he could pass out from the stares he was getting.

“How do you feel turning seven?” I asked Joel and he smiled.

“I don’t feel anything” he shook his head.

“Can we cut the cake already” Mary was getting impatient.

“Mary… Be calm” Ymir reprimanded and Mary pouted sitting down beside Joel, her eyes fixated on the cake.

“On your birthday you didn’t… You didn’t let.. Anyone… Anyone have your cake” Krystal, Ymir’s daughter chimed in. She’s five plus going to six soon.

Mary and Joel’s birthday are only a month apart, though Mary’s only a year older than Joel, technically it’s not actually a year, it’s almost a year, but it’s not, because of the outrageous way Joel was born. But it’s still a year and Joel clearly knows Mary’s his older sister, he has his respects for her and Mary clearly knows she’s the oldest, she also acts like the oldest. Thinking about our days back it all feels like a dream.

“On my birthday everyone ate my cake, what are you talking about” Mary said angrily to Krystal.

“Calm down now Mary” Kathleen laughed.

And yes Mary’s very hyperactive, she gets really angry, not even Kathleen or I can calm her down. She cries when she wants to and yes joel is still the opposite.

Mary’s birthday two months ago was crazy, she cried after the party, why? Because she didn’t get to cut her cake properly. We invited all her friends from school, some neighbours downtown the house was filled, but with Joel it was different, he said he didn’t want anybody, just us, his parents, his sister, Ymir and his cousin Krystal. That day I had asked if he was shy of people or anything but he declined saying he wasn’t shy or anything.

I mean he’s already opening up to me about most of his stuffs, and he’s very smart for a seven year old boy.

“Tell mom to let you cut the cake.” Mary whispered in Joel’s ear. It was a whispher but we all heard it.

“Fine, we’ll cut the cake” Kathleen rolled her eyes and grabbed the knife.

Mary held a smile as she Kathleen cut the cake and gave everyone a piece.

“You sure love cakes, don’t you” I said wiping the sides of Kathleen mouth she had suddenly smuge cake on.

    “Yes I do” she smiled.

“This is so good” Ymir smiled.

    “Yeah very good” Kathleen agreed.

“I’ll get the drinks from the fridge” Kathleen said wanting to stand up, but I stopped her and pointed to her stomach.

“You’re pregnant, remember?” I said and she laughed nervously. “oops, my bad!”

I got the drinks and we all drank till our stomach screamed stop.

Living like this was the best, when you have a loving wife, great children, what more could you possibly want.

Strangely even though Joel’s pregnancy was just three months, Kathleen actually got pregnant for our new baby at exactly nine months.

Ymir said it was because her body has fully adapted to the human way, I mean she breathed our air, ate our foods and it was like her sirenic self was vanishing…  Though Kathleen still had our child at home.

        +

Looking down at our baby boy, i glanced at his sleeping mother and  turned back to him, to see his eyes observing the room.

He’s one month old and I couldn’t love him less. He was called Xavier and was the total opposite of Joel.

My kids grew up healthy and happy and well the house was always quiet, as Mary grew she became less hyperactive, but still didn’t fail to get angry easily.

     +

At twelve Mary complained how she felt awkward sharing a room with her brother, Joel didn’t seem to mind though, and he didn’t really care when Mary moved out of the room and to another empty room.

I mean they’re both growing up and they both need their own private lives.

At fifteen Mary got her first phone immediately she graduated from middle school and though Joel was still in middle school, we got him one too.

Joel was still as quiet as ever, I mean people change when they grow up but he’s still the same. Not that I’m judging him from being the quiet guy, I like how quiet he is and how he didn’t change one bit. Well I love my kids all equally.

As Mary got to high school, she kind of distanced herself from everyone, suddenly became quiet and spent more time with the TV or her phone.

Joel, the same thing, he would lock himself in his room and I guess play with his phone.

Well Mary got to her final class in high school and Joel’s class was behind her and that’s when Kathleen and I starts to see an everyday drama about them.

                                   ~

     #MARY’S POV-

I walked out of my room and hurried down the stairs quietly so no one would hear my footstep, I made it to the living room in success but I heard my name behind me.

    “Mary?”

I froze and turned to see my mom walking out of the kitchen.

“Where are you going? You’re clearly dressed in your uniform! Are you off to school without your brother!” she scoffed.

I rolled my eyes. “Seriously mom, do i have to go school with Joel, he’s seventeen, he’s not a child.”

“You’re both children” my mom smiled.

Joel walked down the stairs with his backpack and his headphone around his neck.

I groaned and rolled my eyes…

“If you really hate going to school with me. You can take the car and I’ll walk to school.” Joel said as he walked down the stairs.

“If I could, do you think I wouldn’t have done that” I rolled my eyes.

“Well I don’t mind.” Joel shrugged.

“You should mind.” my dad said out of nowhere, seriously, he’s a pain in the ass…

“I don’t get what’s so wrong with you and your brother driving in the car together.” My dad stated giving my mom a kiss on her cheek…

They shouldn’t that in front of us, it’s not eyes warming, but eyes disturbing.

“You wouldn’t understand” I said and grabbed the car keys from where it was hung,

“Here, you’re driving” I stated and placed the keys in Joel’s hand.

The front door opened and Krystal walked in breathing heavily.

“Good, I made it in time” she smiled.

She goes to our school too.

“Great, Krystal is here too” I sighed and shook my head.

    .

My parents let’s Krystal drive with us to school, I get that she’s our cousin, but still, riding to school with Joel is already a pain and now Krystal.

I took the passenger’s seat and Krystal took the back seat, while Joel drove us to school.

     –

We all attend a private school, where looks, class, smartness and beauty matters. I mean I do possess all those attributes but standing next to Joel and Krystal, I don’t really feel beautiful.

And my parents, good thing they didn’t hide the truth from me, my mom’s my half mom, that makes Joel and Samuel my half brother and Krystal my half cousin. I don’t know who my real mom is and I seem to care who she is, I love my mom, she’s a total opposite of my dad and clearly I love her more.

We parked the car at the school’s parking loft and walk out.

And just like expected people started whispering. The whispers that I never liked.

*Are you sure they’re related? Joel looks totally charming and looks nothing like Mary.*

“Mary’s pretty but compared to her cousin Krystal, she’s nothing*

     *Joel is so handsome*

    *Krystal is so pretty *

    *Joel is so hot*

    *Joel is extremely charming*

    Somebody..

    Kill me.

Well too bad my real mother wasn’t that pretty like my mom and like krystal’s mom, no kidding how my mom and krystal’s mom looks extremely and extraordinary beautiful. Where the hell did they get their pretty gene.

Joel quickly put on his headset and walked to his class like he was hearing nothing. Oh give me a break, we all heard the whispers. Krystal felt awkward listening to the whispers too.

“I’m… Going to go to class now” she said nervously.

“Why are you telling me that? This isn’t your first day in school, is it?” I rolled my eyes and walked away.

When you suddenly feel like an outcast.

I got to class and to my seat, my friends from the back seat waved to me and I smiled at them. The four of us are friends but sadly we don’t seat together.

Our home room teacher miss Ana walked in with a girl behind her,

    A new student I guess.

The girl kind of looked familiar, but clearly I don’t know her.

“Good morning everyone, this is Ellen andrew, she’ll be joining us today, please give her your full welcome.” miss Ana announced with a smile.

Lucky me. There was an empty seat beside me and Ellen sat down there.

“HI” she smiled at me .

    I glanced at her.

    I shouldn’t be rude. “Hello” I replied.

    “So, I’m Ellen” she smiled.

    “I know” I replied.

    “And you are?” she smiled.

No… Definitely not in the mood for this.

I stood up angrily and walked out of the class.

I walked into the girls bathroom and sighed, I just turned on the sink water and washed my hand for no reason.

First period will be starting soon though.  I’m just trying to not make any more friends this semester.

The bathroom door opened and Ellen, the new girl walked in.

She walked passed me and turned the faucet on the next sink.

“So, I tried to be friendly and you ditched me, how nice of you!” Ellen said and I sighed.

“Look, there are tons of people in the class you can be friends with, I don’t know what you saw with me” I scoffed.

“I saw nothing, I was just trying to be friendly. But guess what? I can be rude too.” she snickered.

I looked up at the bathroom mirror in front of us to see her smirking.

Looking at her and looking at me. We both kind of looked a little alike.

“A heart throb?” Kathleen repeated. I know she doesn’t understand what that meant.

“He’s going to be a lady’s man, girls are going to go crazy for him, we’ll make sure to lock him up” I said and my parents Burst out laughing.

“The only one you should lock up is Mary over here, she’s not up to one year and she’s already a throbber, who’s not willing to stay intact” my dad said and I laughed.

“Anyways,  Joseph, I’ll be here on Friday, right now your father and I needs to be at Liam’s house, his son’s wife just gave birth and well it’s a whole party there.” my mom smiled.

“Liam has a grandson already, how come he didn’t tell me.” I scoffed.

“Because he just recieved the news himself yesterday on his way back from the hospital.

    “Oh” I said.

No wonder he was in a hurry yesterday.

“Maybe you’ll get to see Liam’s child next time, for now, just stay with your child” my mom smiled.

I escorted my parents to the door and my dad picked up the gift bag he dropped earlier.

“‘Anyways, stay happy, I’ll be back soon” my mom said. Opened the door and walked out with my dad.

Kathleen turned to me and dropped Mary down.

“Your parents are so nice.” she smiled.

“See, and you were just changing clothes for nothing” I laughed.

“So that means they like me right?”

“of course, didn’t you see how happy they were.” I smiled.

Kathleen and I paused and stopped talking when Mary started to walk on her won step by step even though her body was wobbling.

She walked from where we stood and almost made it to the living room but she fell down not going any further.

    “Mary’s so cute” Kathleen laughed.

“is it just me or is she getting fat?” I turned to Kathleen.

“She is” Mary nodded in agreement.

“And is it just me or your skinny days have finally be over.” i smiled and Kathleen rolled her eyes.

My hand slid down and went around her waste and i pulled her closer to me.

She haven’t start her tummy binding and it’s already going back to its place, I guess she doesn’t need a tummy binding anymore.

We were about to kiss when a knock came on the door.

“We’ll get the door later.” Kathleen groaned and kissed me.

I smiled through the kiss and pulled back.

“We can’t leave our guess standing, and besides, it’s not like none of us is running away” I said and walked to the door.

I opened the door and saw ymir standing under the sun with a smile. The sun has turned its direction to my house.

Kathleen walked past me and walked outside right where ymir was standing and suddenly she started to glow.

She looked down at her body and then at ymir.

“How come this isn’t happening to your body?.. I thought we all glowed under the sun”  Kathleen asked. And I didn’t even think about it seeing ymir stand under the sun.

“That’s because I don’t want it to, seems like you don’t really know about your ability.” ymir shook her and walked inside.

I pulled Kathleen inside and shut the door.

    “How’s my nephew?” Ymir smiled.

She seemed different today. Happily different.

“Ymir…” Kathleen called and she turned.

“Joel is fine, tell me, how is it, you stood under the sun and nothing happened to you?” I’ve never seen Kathleen so eager to want to know about something so much.

“That’s because, I didn’t want it to” Ymir replied.

“How can someone understand that?” I chimed in.

“Exactly, I don’t understand what you’re saying Ymir, because you don’t want it to?” Kathleen was confused, and so was I. I wanted Kathleen to move around the day too, walk under the sun and be normal.

“I kind of found out We glow under the sun immediately after we discover our sirenic ability, but then again, we only glow under the sun because of the hidden scales we have under our skin, you should see how our scales or any fish scales shine under the sun, scales naturally grow on our skin in the form of tiny crystals and that, combined with cytoplasm, creates the characteristic metallic lustre.”

“Cytoplasm?” Kathleen looked like she’ll pass out from all those English.

I smiled at her. “It’s like a cell in the body”.

“How do you know so much?” Kathleen asked Ymir.

“I study, when you live in a place where your kind doesn’t live, you learn about yourself and them before adapting.” ymir smiled.

    She sure is very smart.

“Maybe I’ll try studying too” Kathleen gave a small laugh.

“You shouldn’t try, you should” ymir stated.

“Yeah, and maybe I’ll be question free” I stated and Kathleen glared at me.

“Anyways, my point is, since our scales are hidden under our human skin, we’re ninety nine percent still full siren, and it glows under the sun, now not glowing under the sun is like a full choice, a whole new decision. Cause if we have the ability to make people do what we want, we also have the ability to control our body, and using our ability to shut down our glowing skin is also like abandoning fifty nine percent of our siren self, cause once you choose to shoo away your scales, and transform into a siren, then you’ll realise you have no scales at all, and it will be hard to cope under the water. So compelling your scales to go away is like abandoning your kind, are you up with that?” ymir asked.

“If I can be human any day, I won’t think twice of saying yes.” Kathleen smiled.

“Okay then, just go under the sun and just think of your scales gone and that’s it”.

Sirens have so much we need to learn, this is really shocking.

Kathleen opened the door and as she stepped out under the sun. She starts to glow, she was like her very own sun.

Suddenly she started to get brighter, I would say brighter than the sun, I was getting scared for a moment, cause she was now unable to look at and all of a sudden she stopped glowing and her skin became normal, just like how it’s supposed to be.

Kathleen quickly ran inside and hugged Ymir.

“Wow” she smiled happily. “I didn’t know we could do this”

“Yeah, I never knew either, cause we always try our abilities on people, what if we tried it on ourselves, I thought and it worked.” ymir smiled.

Kathleen turned to me. “Now I can come with you to the mall and everything will be fine”.

    +

That afternoon Ymir stayed for lunch with us and Kathleen wouldn’t stop talking and everywhere became silent when she asked Ymir.

“And also where do you live now?”

    Ymir’s quietness made everyone quiet.

She finally spoke up. “I live with uhm… Greg”

Her face seemed flushed as she shoved a big steak in her mouth not bothering to cut it small.

    “Who is Greg?” Kathleen asked.

“Greg is… My boyfriend” she replied.

Kathleen blinked twice and she looked at Ymir.

“And he knows about your identity!” Kathleen stated.

“He does” Ymir smiled to herself.

“When did he find out? Was he cool with it?” Kathleen asked.

“Well see, we’ve been together way back before you met Joseph, but suddenly I heard how your mom and sister are in danger and I had to live, I really liked Greg, and for the first time I didn’t want to forget me or miss, and slowly each day, I studied my compelling ability and used it on him, I know it will be dangerous if I left him because of my ability I used, but I didn’t want to lose him.” Ymir sighed.

    Wait…

    The story though.

I immediately took out my phone and went back to my history, after scrolling past the countless history, I finally found my encounter with… I clicked on it and decided to the see the name of the person who posted the story, the username was reading *Gregggg455* of course it’s the same Greg, she is the Ymir I read about.

I dropped my phone and looked up at ymir.

“But still, compelling someone to fall for you is not very nice.” I said to ymir.

“I know that” she sighed. “And I didn’t make him fall for me, we were already in love with each other but, I just made him not forget me.” ymir expound.

“Not forget him? He almost committed suicide, he had to Recieve therapy” I scoffed.

“H..how do you know about that?” Ymir stuttered.

“Because Your sweet Greg, almost went crazy for you And after receiving therapy, he shared both of your stories anonymously for people to read, but good for you, he didn’t regret ever meeting you, the story was supposed to be romantic, but it was scary, if he had truly loved you, he wouldn’t forget you, you shouldn’t have mess with his head Ymir” I explained.

     Ymir got up immediately.

“I have to go” she said.

“But you’re not done with your me–

“Another time kathleen” Ymir said, thanked me for the food and walked away.

Kathleen looked at me and shrugged.

Kathleen turned to see Mary holding a spoon and about to put it in her mouth.

“Drop the spoon Mary” Kathleen said sternly.

    Mary looked up at her.

“Drop it” Kathleen said and tapped the table.

Mary looked at me and then turned back to Kathleen.

“Come on, let’s go, drop the spoon” Kathleen ordered and Mary dropped the spoon and starts to cry.

Kathleen burst out laughing and I shook my head.. Seeing Kathleen laugh amused Mary and she stopped crying.

    Babies…

    +

That night after watching Kathleen give Joel his bath, I took him in my arm and he was wrapped in a fine cotton towel.

Seeing how I was holding Joel standing by the bathroom mirror, Mary starts to cry wanting me to hold her too, and she stretched her hands up at me and open and close her fingers eagerly.

I shook my head at her and stick my tongue out at her playfully, she seems to find the gesture annoying and screamed louder.

     Kathleen burst out laughing.

“Mary, come over here” Kathleen smiled.

Mary turned to her and looking at me one more time, she crawled to Kathleen.

Kathleen grabbed her and kissed her cheeks.

“Daddy’s very mean isn’t he, now let’s not mind him and take our baths without him okay.” Kathleen smiled and kissed Mary’s nose.. I shook my head and walked out of the bathroom with my son.

    ~

    ~

Kathleen and I were the ones awake, the house seemed quiet with Joel and Mary asleep, Mary especially, Joel isn’t much of a crier. He tends to be super quiet. But Mary, as she grows everyday, she’s just getting stubborn. But still she’s very loveable.

Kathleen got on the bed beside me and starts to tie her hair at her back.

I sat up and cleared my throat.

I should do it now. I thought.

“Kath” I called and she turned to me.

“Yeah?” she smiled sitting down and shoving her legs under the blanket.

“I know, I’m not holding a ring or anything or not holding any special event, but will you marry me.?” I asked.

“Whoa” she stated. “That just made my tummy churn” she laughed.

“But sure, yes, of course, I will, I mean I do, why would I say no” she laughed and I smiled.

    “Thank you” I Beamed.

She straddled me immediately on the bed and kissed me.

                            [~]

Holding my two weeks old baby boy in my hand, I heard my name from the resting room upstairs and head upstairs.

Joel’s eyes were wide open and was looking around.

Babies around his age sleeps the whole day, but no he’s just so different.

I walked into the room and saw Kathleen smiling with Mary.

“You won’t believe me when I say Mary took a step all by herself, all the way from here to over there.” Kathleen smiled pointing the distance Mary has walked.

She was starting to look like herself again. She was eating properly, sleeping properly, I don’t really let her do anything, the only thing she do is feed Joel, I never even let her hold him. Her too skinny figure was the worst, I wanted her to be herself again.

“She should be able to walk, she’s almost twelve months” I smiled.

“You think?” Kathleen smiled and I nodded.

“Okay now, I want you to see for yourself, tell mary to come meet you over there.” Kathleen stated.

I sighed. “Mary, come to daddy” I smiled at Mary and she just stare at me.

“Come on Mary, go to daddy” Kathleen persuaded.

“Don’t tell me you’re shy, come on sweetie, Joel’s waiting to meet you.” I said and let out a smile.

Mary giggled happily and starts to walk towards me all by herself, her body and legs were wobbling, but she made she got to me.

“Good girl” I smiled down at her.

Her hands stretched out to me and  I held Joel’s body well and grabbed Mary with my other hand.

Mary sat on my arm and looked down at her half brother…

She touched his face and immediately pulled her hands back to herself laughing.

“he’s cute isn’t he.” I smiled at Mary.

“The fact that he looks like you makes him super cute” Kathleen chimed in.

“Well I know you’re wrong cause you’re super beautiful and you passed it down to Joel.” i smiled.

“How come I don’t see me when I look down at him but you” Kathleen’s smile was capturing.

“Oh and guess what, my mother will be coming over pretty soon.” I changed the subject immediately it hit me.

    “Your mother?” Kathleen seemed thrilled.

“You know, I haven’t really tell her about you, or you being pregnant and then giving birth, she’ll probably choke me to death if she finds out without me telling her, so I’ll be breaking the news to her tonight.” I explained and Kathleen nodded and took Mary from me when Mary reached for her.

“I think Mary likes me more than you” Kathleen smiled..

“That’s because you spoiled her to.” I smirked.

    “No I didn’t” Kathleen gasped.

    “Yes you did.”

“Oh so, that’s why you’re trying so hard, so Joel can like so much.” Kathleen rolled her eyes.

“If that is what you think!” I arched my brows.

Joel starts to move and was about to cry I think.

Kathleen looked down at her chest, I’m starting to get soaked “He’s hungry.” Kathleen smiled.

    “Oh” I said.

Kathleen dropped Mary and room Joel from me.

I gave her privacy to feed Joel and went to make dinner, not that none of us cares about privacy.

I prepared dinner and by then, Kathleen had already put Joel to sleep and had placed him in Mary’s crib, the crib no longer belongs to Mary but Joel.

We had chicken fried rice that evening and of course Mary and Kathleen seemed to enjoy the meal more than me. Mary’s basically eats everything we eat now, she’s not a baby anymore, I mean she is but she’ll be one year soon. She has complete twenty teeth.

She’s growing up so well, even though some of her mates are still being breast fed, she’s still doing better.

“I love you soooo much..” Kathleen breathed out after dinner.

“Just say you love the food. Don’t use me as an excuse” I scoffed and she laughed.

“Okay, I love you both, but I love the food more.” Kathleen laughed and I rolled my eyes.

She definitely didn’t look like someone who just gave birth, she still acts cute, juvenile, she’s funny and still ask a lot of questions too. Ymir has been coming here lately though, acting like an older sister to Kathleen, playing with Mary. She’s like almost part of the family.

    Family….!

I glanced at Kathleen who was busy telling Mary to let go of the plate so she’ll clear the table, I sighed to myself and shook my head.

What the hell am I waiting for.

That moment a knock came in at the front door and I went to answer it.

Nobody usually knocks on this door, but lately I think I will count it up to a hundred times, that I’ve heard that door being knocked over by none other than ymir or doctor Liam.

I opened the door and wasn’t surprised when I saw Liam. He seemed to be in a hurry.

“Here! It’s getting late, this is what you asked for, I’ll be off then” Liam said shoving some papers in my hand and rushing to his car.

I closed the door and Kathleen quickly walked up to me…

“What’s that and who was that?” she asked curiously.

“That was Liam.” I replied looking down at the papers carefully.

Days ago doctor Liam had take a blood sample from Leo.

“This is Joel’s birth certificate” I smiled and Kathleen took it from me immediately grinning from ear to ear.

    “Wow” she breathed out.

“Wow indeed, and this is the result for Joel’s blood test” I said and my lips curved into a happy smile.

Kathleen’s blood test result clearly read that she wasn’t human, it showed in between a Nile tilapia and a human. But looking at Joel’s blood test it was showing how human he was.

I took the certificate from Kathleen and smiled. “I’ll go put this where exactly Mary’s own is.”

“Do you have a birth certificate” Kathleen asked.

“of course” I laughed “Everyone does”

    “I don’t” Kathleen frowned.

“Well that’s no problem cause we’ll make one for you” I smiled.

    “That’s great” Kathleen Beamed.

She looked down and then up again.

“But i don’t have a birthday, the way we calculate our age is not the way you guys do.” Kathleen shrugged.

    “How do you mean.”

“We get a year older each time the moon is full” Kathleen expound.

“What the hell, who the hell implemented that messed up rule.” I scoffed.

    “Neptune” she replied.

“It’s as stupid as him, anyways you can share my birthday! I’m August twelve” I smiled.

“perfect. And If I’m twenty six, I think you should be around twenty two?” I don’t know but she looks twenty two to me.

Kathleen seemed excited over that and that night she slept soundly with Mary beside her.

That night I called my mother.

Her voice seemed like she was just waking up from a deep slumber.

“Hey mom” I said very lowly.

“Joseph? Why are you calling so late.” my bad, she sounded very sleepy.

“Sorry, I just want to talk to you about something, mom I have another son.” I quickly said.

“Another son?” my mom didn’t seem too surprised. “Let me guess, is it from that Kathleen girl”

    I was stunned.

“How did you know Kath, I’ve never told you about her before.” I stated.

“Liam told me about your sweet Kathleen months ago, I wanted to come over to see who she was, but I didn’t want to be named as a nosy mom or a pushover, I just believe you know who you want best.” my mom words made me smile.

“I want you to come over mom, and you can be as pushy and nosy as you wish. You’re my mom anyways” I said.

I could feel her smile. “Go to bed,” she said and hung up.

     *

      *

“Is this dress okay?” Kathleen asked arranging her, it’s growing long again, but well, she’s pretty either long or short.

“Just toss a shirt over your body and you’re looking good” I sighed.

“But your mother is coming over, how do you expect me not to look my best” she said shoving me over and unzipping the dress on her body.

“You’ve changed almost four times kath, you look great” I said stopping her from moving and zipping her cloth back up.

“look, my mom will love you” I smiled…

“You think so” she breathed out.

    “I know so”

I took her face in my hands and kissed both her cheeks, she smiled and nodded.

The suddenly opened and my mom walked in, for all the reasons in the word, she believes she’s not supposed to knock.

And wow she got here real fast.

Kathleen seemed nervous all of a sudden. I held her hand and walked up to my mom.

“Mom” I smiled at her and my eyes immediately dart to my father who was walking in with a wrapped gift box.

    “Dad” I smiled.

“Yeah, Joseph, go get me a glass of water, your old man’s thirsty” my dad said dropping the gift bag on the floor.

I was about to go get it but Kathleen chimed in. “I’ll go get you a glass of water”

Kathleen left for the kitchen and my parent’s eyes never left me as they asked.

“is she the Kathleen?” my mom asked.

“The one who just gave birth?” my dad added.

    “Yes she is.” I replied.

“When did you guys even meet, everything is happening so fast or am I growing too old and now you have a second child” my mother scoffed and I laughed.

“We’ve met way back before Liam could tell” I Lied.

“So that means she was pregnant for before Suzanne left you?” my mom asked.

    “Seems like it.” I Lied.

It’s better to lie this way than her being caught.

“So you both cheated on each other, you guys are the worst together, I never really like Suzanne from the start” my mom said and I laughed.

“You’re happy aren’t you?” my dad asked and I nodded.

    “More than happy.” I smiled.

“And that’s the only thing that matters, now where is my little pumpkin pie” my dad asked.

“Ever since she starts to walk on her own, she’s been walking and sneaking around the house lately.

My dad found Mary at the back of the couch and grabbed her immediately.

Kathleen came back with the water and handed it to my dad in the most polite way, and seeing Kathleen Mary reach for her leaving my dad.

“Gracious goodness, you’re beautiful” my dad laughed staring at Kathleen as he took his water.

“Thank you” Kathleen glanced at me.

“She sure is” my mother smiled.

    “Th..thank you Mrs… Mrs..

“Oh please, call me mom,” my mom rolled her eyes, and I could tell Kathleen almost burst with excitement hearing that.

“Now where is my grandson?” my mom asked…

    ~

    ~

“Are you sure he’s a boy?” my dad asked looking down at sleeping Joel in his crib.

“What? Are you indirectly saying boys can’t be pretty?” I scoffed making Kathleen laugh and Kathleen also making Mary laugh too in her arms.

“boys can be pretty, but what your father meant is, Joel has a feminine beauty. He is sure going to be a heart throb.” my mother smiled.

    “Good morning” I said.

“Good morning dear Joseph” Doctor Liam said and he seemed to be in a really good mood. More of an exciting mood.

“And may I ask why you’re in such a glorious mood?” I smiled.

“Oh I’m so glad you asked, the girl in which I drew her blood yesterday, I went back to my lab, even though you didn’t accept my result saying my computer produced fake result, I still managed to work on the blood test and you wouldn’t believe what i found out about it. “

    Oh no.

“You could have just left the case, I mean–

“I wanted to, but I’m glad I picked up the test again. And I was shocked.” Liam smiled  taking out some papers from his bag.

“Here”, he said and  gave me two different kind of papers.

He brought out an extra paper and placed his brief case on the couch. The smile he held was more than I’ve ever see from him.

He told me to look down at both of the papers.

“Now look, this a blood test result from a human, and this other paper is a blood test from a fish, this is just a common Nile tilapia fish blood test results. Now look at the lady’s blood test result I drew out days ago” Liam smiled and placed Kathleen’s blood test result in front of my eyes.

“Now if you study this three results in front of your eyes, you can see how the lady’s result is almost the same to the fish result and the human result, And believe me, this is huge.” Liam laughed.

“I… I don’t think this is correct, maybe you should recheck.” I stuttered.

“No can do” Liam laughed. “I already checked this results more than twice, four in total and it kept saying the same thing I couldn’t believe my eyes.” Liam smiled.

I didn’t know what he said, I just watched as he smiled gloriously smiling at more papers he took from his bag.

“Is that copies of Kathleen’s result?” I asked.

“Yeah” He smiled looking at them.

“Can I see all of them?” I asked.

“Yeah sure” He gave me the papers taking off his glasses and cleaning his eyes with his handkerchief.

I took the remaining copies from him and tore it into pieces.

He was dumbfounded by my action.

“Why did you do that?” he finally asked.

“It was an accident” I smiled.

“Well that seemed beyond an accident, it’s a good thing I had to back the file up in my computer.” Liam breathed out a sigh.

“Well how about you delete that file immediately you go back to your office!” I smirked.

“Why…? Why would I do that?” Liam asked blinking rapidly.

    “Personal reasons.” I smiled.

Liam looked at me carefully, he moved his grey hair back and smiled.

“Do you know something Joseph?” Liam scoffed.

“Know something, what do you mean, know something?” I narrowed my eyes at him.

“Joseph I’ve known you all your life. You can’t possibly keep anything from me can you?” Liam asked sitting down.

“And what can I possibly keep from you?” I threw back the question.

“I don’t know, but I think you do!” Liam stated.

“What are you implying?” I scoffed.

    “Nothi-

Doctor Liam paused when he noticed Kathleen walking into the living room.

“Joseph…” Kathleen called walking up to me with sleepy eyes.

“Miss Kathleen!” Liam suddenly smiled and walked up to Kathleen.

Of course Kathleen recognized him and put up a warm smile immediately “Doctor… Li..

“Doctor Liam” Liam helped and Kathleen smiled.

“How are you and your baby?” Liam smiled.

    “We’re both fine.” Kathleen smiled.

    “Good to hear” Liam smiled.

“So I checked your blood and the test resu–

“Kathleen!” I called cutting Liam off. “Can you uhm… Give Liam and I a moment?” I smiled at Kathleen and she nodded and walked away.

“Why won’t you let me talk to her.” Liam was furious.

“Look, Liam, I know you as not the inquisitive type, and I just called you here to tell me how Kathleen will be doing if she’s going to be alright, what is actually wrong with her, but here you are telling me about how you mixed a fish DNA and a lady’s DNA, just tell me what to make her feel better.” I sighed.

Liam seemed discouraged by my attitude and he sighed and opened his briefcase fully.

“She didn’t seem to be going through stress or anything, she’s very healthy, but I don’t understand why she got so tired that here, but I brought some shots for her that will totally make her feel better, I mean she’s pregnant and women and their type of bodies. If you want i can come here, every Tuesday and Thursday to give her some treatments that will help her with her stability, cause she’s more skinner than the last time I came here” Liam shook his head.

    “No kidding.” I sighed.

“When my son’s wife was pregnant-

“she almost weighed one hundred pounds in one month, you’ve told me that story a million times Liam” I smiled and he laughed.

“What I’m just trying to say is, she might get more skinner than this but it’s just her body and the baby will be okay.” Liam said and I nodded.

Even he sees how skinny Kathleen’s getting.

“How is dear Mary!” Liam asked.

“She’s asleep and fine.” I replied.

“I remembered when Suzanne was pregnant with her and how she always–

“You do nothing else but always remember.” I cut him off and he laughed.

“Anyways Jojo I’ll be leaving after miss Kathleen take these shots.” Liam smiled.

“I warned you not to call me that anymore when I turned fifteen, I can’t believe you” I shook my head Negatively.

“And you should know by now that I don’t listen to what you say.” Liam added and we both laughed.

Though Liam was way older than me to be a father, he was like a best friend and a family too, he was just a doctor who helped my mom through her pregnancy days for me, and suddenly became our own private doctor and now he feels like family too.

    *

Kathleen came back to the living room to take her shots doctor Liam got for her, while the syringe was piercing into her hand she didn’t even flinch. And when I got a flu some years ago and had to take some shots, I almost cried and Suzanne just laughed at me.

After giving Kathleen the shots, she gave her some pills and told her when to take them.

Before Liam left, he asked me.

“Do you know anything about the test results?”

“I don’t know what or where you’re trying to get to but can you drop that Liam for me…” I said and he sighed.

“But this is huge, how can a human blood reads a human and also a fish and believe me when I say no body has ever disc–

Liam stopped talking when he read my eyes.

“Alright, I’ll drop the case, it’s stupid anyways” Liam sighed.

“Yeah it is, cause if I can read your mind you’re basically thinking you’ve discovered something new, but what if you got some fish blood into Kathleen’s blood and now you’re ranting about how this and that are fish, are you trying to say Kathleen blood is abnormal?” I arched my brows at him and he laughed.

“Of course not. You know what. Let’s not talk about this anymore, send my greetings to your parents.”  Liam smiled before leaving.

    .

That night right after dinner, Kathleen took out her pills and I thought she was going to swallow it with the help of water, but after bringing out the different pills and amount she’s supposed to take she threw it all in her mouth and starts to chew it, before I could tell her about the swallowing which was way easy.

Kathleen faced squeezed tightly and she turned to me.

    I laughed. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s bitter.” she squeezed her face even more.

“I understand, you haven’t taken pills before, but pills isn’t candy, you didn’t even let me tell you how to take them.” I laughed.

She grabbed the water in front of her and gulped it in one go.

Kathleen breathed out a sigh. “That’s better.” she smiled.

“Yeah, water makes everything better.” I smiled too.

“But do you think all these pills and portions I’m taking are going to help me? You know I’m not like you guys.” Kathleen.

“Not like us?” I scoffed. “We’re a the same Kathleen” I let out a warm smile and she Beamed.

Mary made a gag in front of us and we smiled at her too.

    +

That night we slept soundly and the next day, Kathleen seemed to be fine again.

Days turned into weeks and Kathleen’s stomach grew more than it was supposed to, it was scary because it seemed unreal, every Tuesday and Thursday, I had to go meet doctor Liam in his office to get Kathleen’s pills because I was afraid of him coming to my home and seeing Kathleen’s stomach grow Like it was already completing the eight to nine months stages.

From my views, the pills Kathleen took was really helping cause as the stomach grew she grew skinny but not a day, she felt weak, I still kept my words and I supported her with every bone in my body, though I was worried.

Weeks turned into months and that’s we lived, everything at home was for Kathleen, she eats like a lion and changes mood every single Second, she was mostly happy and half angry, whenever she was angry Mary was the only person who could calm her down, cause anytime she would be angry, Mary would never fail to smile at her, it was like Mary was reading her.

It was like deja vu of Kathleen’s medicine every single day, but still yet I enjoyed her company and never liked to imagine what the house would be like without Kathleen or Mary here.

    +

    +

Kathleen and I celebrated when we noticed Mary’s teeth has gotten to eight, it was four at the bottom and four at the top, it’s been two months now and whenever she’s alone, she’s always trying to stand on her own, even if she can’t stand without holding on to something. Kathleen stomach became scarier and so did she, it was like her skin had dried against her bones, I always try to think it was nothing, doctor Liam had stopped prescribing pills for her saying it was for the best and I didn’t for once dare to look at Kathleen like she was going to break even if she looked that way.

It was sunny afternoon, Kathleen, Mary and I were in the living room, while Kathleen and Mary were bonding like real mother and daughter, I sat on the couch with my phone having a text conversation with Martins.

I knock came on the door and I went to attend to the door. It was Ymir, it’s been ages since she came here.

“Where is Ymir?” she quickly asked “she hasn’t given birth yet right?” she rushed her words.

“No she hasn’t, its just three months why would she give birth.” I scoffed.

“I’m sure her stomach’s bigger than your head, it should have been the perfect explanation for you that, the baby inside Kathleen’s stomach will be out in any days n–

Ymir and I both heard Kathleen’s voice from the living room and we rushed to her immediately to see her on her feet panicking, underneath her open  legs, the floor was a bit wet.

“I think I peed” she said in a panicked voice.

“It’s not pee, your water just broke.”  Ymir stated.

And in my front, in front of the fridge Kathleen drank five bottles of water. And it was the big bottle sized.

Kathleen breathed out tiredly as she picked the bottles from the floor.

“Now I feel alive again.” she gave me a smile.

I stood still, my eyes fixated on her. What the hell, just happened?

Kathleen smiled at me and as she disposed the bottles into the kitchen’s waste bin, she walked out of the kitchen and still yet I followed her.

My head started to calculate on why she passed out, but if she doesn’t know, how do I know?.

I walked into the living room and met her sitting down on the couch beside Mary. I didn’t bother asking about why she passed out.

Or is she dehydrated? Because fishes get dehydrated few minutes after they’re out from the water. But still she has been doing fine and…

I quit thinking on my own and asked her.

“Why did you drink so much quantity of water?” I asked sitting down opposite her.

“Because I felt super thirsty!” she replied.

“No, one, not even in a hundred years can feel so thirsty to empty five bottles in one go!” I tell and she shrugged.

“Are you getting dehydrated or something?” I asked.

    “De– hydr–ated?” she repeated

“Like parched, it’s like when you’re dry on the inside, You know how fishes die when they are brought out of the water, because their body suddenly becomes dry and they crave for the water because they can’t swim or breathe without that water. do you miss the water or anything?” I asked to be sure.

    Kathleen laughed.

“Why on neptune would I miss the water? I love it here and I just drank so much water because I was thirsty that’s all” Kathleen smiled.

“That’s all?” I raised my brows at her.

“Look I’m not trying to be a detective or any thing, but I feel really uncomfortable with what just happened, so you’re telling me that when you sirens are out of the water for a long time, you don’t get dehydrated?” I asked and she shook her head Negatively.

“We don’t! Honestly, and now thinking about it, it’s strange, with what happened to me too! I’ve never drank so much water like that.” she laughed.

“This isn’t funny kath, it’s something we should worry about” I let her know.

She breathed out a sigh. “I don’t know what happened sir, Joseph but I am fine now.”

“And how are you so sure something like that won’t happen again?” I narrowed my eyes at her.

“Because I’m so sure.” she repeated.

I swallowed my smile by her outrageous reply.

“So… How was it, did the baby belong to you?” Kathleen asked. Her gaze was stern and curious.

    “Huh?”

“No, the baby actually belongs to Henry! And Suzanne tried to pin the baby on me so she’ll get back together with me.” I explained and Kathleen gasped.

“She is such a bad person.”

    “I know right!”  I smirked.

We became quiet again, well for a brief moment because Kathleen immediately started another conversation.

“Joseph!” she called and I looked up. What happened to the sir.

    Well it doesn’t matter.

“Just like you taught me how to surf the internet before you left to meet Suzanne, I was surfing the internet and believe when I say the internet knows everything, I was surfing the internet when I came across the question love, they asked what was love and told me to click the page to understand the meaning of love.” Kathleen explained happily.

“Okay? And let me guess you clicked the page right?” i scoffed and she nodded with a smile.

“I clicked the page and they explained what love is, I came across so many questions and the answers and I was thrilled, so many questions on my mind were answered, it was like magic.”  Kathleen explained and you should see the way her eyes lit up in excitement as she talked. She was like a child, a child who was sailing off on a deserted rainbow and seeing things she hadn’t seen before. This story is written by Ruthie lee.

Kathleen quieted down and gave a small sigh. “And then I came across something that said, when you and the opposite gender, share cuddles and kisses what does it mean?”  she raised her head up at me. Is she waiting for me to answer her question? When I said nothing she sighed again.

“I left that question when I found another one similar to it but had a slight different, and it said when you and the opposite gender, shares more than hugs and  kisses, when you’re not even married neither are you guys In a dating relationship what does it mean? The question made me pause because the question sounded like something that should be answered by you, sir, Joseph! What does it mean?”

    She never stops.

Maybe it wasn’t good idea dropping my phone with her. I like her being clueless.

    Finally I said something

“What does it mean? Didn’t you read the answer to that?” I asked.

“I did, but I want to hear from you first.”  she lowly said and her head turned to her fingers on her thighs.

Well according to her question I clearly don’t know what to reply as an answer.

when you and the opposite gender, shares more than hugs and  kisses, when you’re not even married neither are you guys In a dating relationship what does it mean? That question kind of feels like…. Us.

Kath and I aren’t dating, neither are we married, we’ve hugged more than once and kissed more than once too, we’ve had sexual intercourse once. And yet we are not in any relationship.

‘is it necessary to be in any relationship?’ my subconscious asked and I sighed and looked at Kathleen.

    “I don’t know.” I stated. “To be very honest, I don’t know”.

Kathleen looked up at me. “You’re very smart sir, Joseph how can you not know something like this.”

“Because I am not a love expert” I replied. “You said you saw the answer but you wanted to hear from me first, now tell me what did the answer say?”

Kathleen tilt her head. “It said what I didn’t understand. It said, friends with benefits, what does that mean?” Kathleen looked confused to show she really doesn’t know what friends with benefits meant.

It was kind of embarrassing explaining and having this kind of conversation with Kathleen.

“It’s somewhere between a dating relationship and a friendship.” I started. “Friends with benefits means when two friends who knows each other so well engage in intimate or sexual activity without really dating each other.”

Kathleen wore a sad smile. “That’s what we are right? We don’t have anything going on we are just being intimate with each other, I thought it was a good thing, but now with you explaining to me, I don’t want to be friends with benefits with you.” she looked at me.

I shook my head. “That’s not what we are.” I said, assuring

“Then. What are we?” she asked.

“Think about it, we’re not even friends to begin with.” I said.

“Isn’t that even worse?” she sniffed.

Don’t tell me she’s about to cry. “If we’re not even friends, then how do we become friends with benefits!”.

“Huh?” I was confused by what she was talking about.

“Look Kathleen” I called and she turned to me. “We do not stand as friends neither are we friends with benefits”.

“Okay then what are we?” she asked.

“We’re in a relationship!” I tell her. Her eyes almost lit up in excitement but she managed to keep her cool.

“What kind of relationship?” she asked.

“We’re in a dating relationship!” I said and gave a small nod.

I just started a relationship between us.

    “We are?” Kathleen smiled.

    “We are.” I repeated.

I didn’t know when I placed a soft kiss on Kathleen’s lips and backed away immediately.

She giggled. “It’s okay!” she smiled.

“Even If you don’t like me the way I do. At least you’re here, at least your company is enough” Kathleen smiled.

Is she supposed to a siren or an angel?

We both remained quiet and Kathleen suddenly stood up.

“But, sir, Joseph don’t you think you should make use of this rooms upstairs? I mean it’s beautiful and spacious enough for anyone to live in.” Kathleen smiled.

“Well yes I know that, but we’ve occupied downstairs and there’s no need for us to occupy any one up here. I wanted to have tenants but I realized I wanted peace too, but it’s best being empty like this” I expound.

“I like it up here, you can see outside and the lake from up here with a clear view”. Kathleen smiled shimmering under the rays of sunlight that crawled into the room through the open glass from the window.

“Yes that’s why I chose to have my house here, I really love this view and the lake to be precise.” I said standing up with Mary in my arms.

I walked up to Kathleen and stood beside her watching the lake.

“Sir, Joseph, do you know that all waters are connected, the oceans, rivers and this lake are connected.?” she asked all cheerfully and I nodded.

“I do, it might look like it’s not connected cause it has a certain where it obtained some land but underneath, the water still connects.” I explained and she gasped.

“How did you know that sir, Joseph?”

I laughed. “I went to school!”.

    “School, oh yeah” she laughed.

“And I guess you know that because of… What you are.” I said and praised myself for not making any expression that would made her sad.

“Yes, because of what I am.” she repeated lowly. “And now, water is the least place I’m supposed to be, because they’re all connected, they’ll find me no matter where I dive in.”

“They’ll find you? Who?” I asked.

She sighed. “It’s long story, but soon I’ll tell you about it sir, Joseph” she quickly wore a smile.

Kathleen leaned on my shoulder and let’s out a sigh and immediately and “Ouch”.

    Mary was pulling her hair.

Kathleen straightened her head and laughed.

“You can’t be selfish Mary, you can’t just have sir, Joseph all to yourself.” she teased.

I tried to stop myself from smiling. “Correction, Mary knows me as daddy, not, sir, Joseph” I stated and she smiled and took Mary from me.

“Anyways Sir, Joseph don’t you think we should make this room something, out of all the rooms up here, this one’s my favorite.” Kathleen grinned.

“Okay, should I make it a play house for Mary? Mary isn’t really old enough for play house, so she’s fine in her crib with her stuffed toys.” i stated.

“Okay what about a bedroom.” Kathleen blurted out.

I scoffed “We all bedrooms kath”

“What about another kitchen?” Kathleen stated.

I laughed. “Not possible, one is enough, your ideas your not good enough.”

“Okay how about, we have breakfast here.” Kathleen poured out another lame idea about the empty room.

“Or we could follow my opinion and make this room a resting zone” I suggested.

“A resting zone?” she looked at me Confused.

“Yeah, like if you’re tired or stressed out and you don’t feel like sleeping in your bedroom, you can come here and rest all you want, you can enjoy the sun from the huge window here, or enjoy the night breeze” I expound.

“That is a great idea.” Kathleen Beamed. “But it’s a resting zone, it won’t be empty will it?” she asked. And I shook my head Negatively.

“I have like more furnitures in the attic maybe I’ll just move some of them here later.” I said and she smiled.

We both remained quiet again and just watched the view right in front of us.

     “Sir, Joseph” Kathleen called.

    “hmm?” I turned to her.

She smiled. “Nothing, just like the sound of your name.”

“Well my name isn’t exactly sir, Joseph, its just Jospeh!” I stated.

“Oh sorry then, sir, just Jospeh” she smiled and I laughed and gave a small eye roll.

If this isn’t happiness, then what is.

    +

“You can’t add bread and ketchup and eat them like it’s a normal thing to do.” I half yelled at Kathleen over lunch.

“But it’s really nice, it tastes so good” she smiled.

“to you it does, if anyone could walk in here and see you, they would tell you his poor your food combination is and thank God I’m done eating or else I would have lost my appetite” I said standing up with sleeping Mary in my arms.

“Where are you going sir, Joseph?” she asked as I started to walk away.

“To put Mary down.” I replied.

“And after that?” she asked again

“Nothing” I grunt and walked into my room.

I let Mary stay in her crib this time and walked out of my room.

I found out where we had eaten lunch had been cleared and no sign of Kathleen.

Kathleen suddenly walked out of the kitchen and seeing me she smiled.

“Sir, Joseph since you have nothing to do, why don’t we move some furnitures like you said to the empty room upstairs.” Kathleen grinned.

“But you just ate, you should be resting instead of trying to move things.” I told her.

“How can I rest when we haven’t even set our resting room” she blurted

I scoffed. “You have the couch where you can rest, and you also have your room where there’s a bed. There’s plenty of place for you to rest.”.

“No, this is called a living room and my room is called a bedroom, and the room upstairs is called a resting room, where we rest so how do you possibly want me to rest in the living room or my room when it’s not called a resting room.”  Kathleen explained with a serious face like she’s saying something that makes so much sense.

“I’m not going to argue with you Kath, but sure since you feel all powerful, let’s go move some of the little stuff.” I said and she smiled happily and went straight to the stairs.

    She’s just like a child.

Two hours later and the empty room had a mattress on its cold floor,  a long comfortable sofa was beside the window and an almost flat bed was placed at the corner of the room, Kathleen suggested we leave that there for “Mary”.

“Now it feels warm.” Kathleen said admiring to not so empty room again.

“Yeah, now are you satisfied?” I asked and she nodded.

“Just so you know, this is a place for resting, you can just come here during your free time, you don’t eat here, and always make sure you go back to your room anytime you rest here during the nights.” I instructed.

    “Got it” she smiled.

Her smile kind of got me and I didn’t know when I smiled too.

“Sir, Joseph it’s almost late, we haven’t had dinner.” Kathleen complained

“For two minutes can you try and not think of food?” I asked her shaking my head Negatively.

“I’ll try!” she smiled and walked up to me…

She gave me a small hug and skipped out out of the room happily.

What is she so happy about.

I smiled and walked out too, I peeked at our so called “resting room” and smiled.

     Kathleen is such a Character.

Mary woke up and we all had late dinner and Kathleen couldn’t stop ranting about how the night was great and cool and how will should all go to the ‘resting room’.

Her wish came true, as I agreed and she took Mary from me and headed there before me.

As I walked inside the room, Mary was on the floor bed chewing on a loaf of bread that had already been flooded by her saliva .

“Did you give her that?” I smiled..

“Yeah, she wouldn’t stop chewing my hand.” Kathleen laughed…

“Or maybe her teeth are just itchy.”

“Sir Jospeh.” Kathleen called and I turned to her.

“Come, see, the view in the night from up here is wonderful.” she said and I walked up to her and sat on the sofa. Sitting on the sofa opposite the window, you could see the trees, the lake, and the skies, it was like a movie…

“This is nice” I smiled enjoying the cool Breeze that surrounded my body.

Kathleen sat beside me and moved her body close to mine. She rested her head on my shoulder and breathed out a sigh. “this is sure wonderful.”

“The cool breeze right?” I smiled not minding her head on my shoulder, it’s nothing new and it’s quite comforting.

“Not the breeze, you! Sir Joseph” she said linking her hand with, “You’re amazing.” she breathed out a happy smile.

My heart jingled at the words and I smiled… “Well thank you for thinking I’m an amazing person.”

I looked down at Kathleen and she was smiling from ear to ear, she noticed my gaze and looked up at me.

She slowly raised her head up from my shoulder and her hand slid away from mine.

“Sir, Joseph,” she called and leaned closer to me,

And coincidently the moon crawled out from the thick skies and shone inside the room with it’s dim light.

“What is it?” I asked, calming the inner man in me cause Kathleen was so close to me.

“Am about to kiss you, am I permitted?” she asked her eyes never blinking or living mine.

And how could I say no.

It was like we read each other’s mine cause we both went for it immediately.

Hungrily, we both took each other’s mouth in and I didn’t know how or when I took Kathleen under me and she was suddenly lying on the sofa.

I was on top of her and the kiss just got really intense. Our never ending kisses.

The feeling that ignited in me made me rough on her and she really liked cause her circled around my neck and she pulled me down to her even more.

We didn’t stop to catch our breaths and we just went on and on, and slowly her hands suddenly starts to  linger around my shirt.

“Sir, Joseph, whatever you do, do not look at me in the eyes when I’m happy like this!”  she instructed.

“And why is that?” I scoffed.

    “You’ll hate me!” she replied.

“What?” I almost laughed. “Hate you, how? Why?”

“Because you’ll fall in love with me!” she answered

I paused and took a good look at her.

“Fall in love with you?” I scoffed.

She nodded without saying a word, but completely focused on the drumstick she suddenly picked up.

“I get that you’re pretty and all, you are really full of yourself Kathleen. And do you think that’s how love works?” I asked.

“I don’t know, how does love works?” she threw back the question.

“Why are you asking me that, haven’t you been in love before?”

She smiled. “I haven’t, but I heard love is beautiful!”

    She’s kidding right.

“wait.. Hold up, you want to tell me, you haven’t fall in love before?” I asked and she nodded.

“So you don’t know what love is?” I almost yelled and she nodded.

Mary’s little hand touched my chest and I started to feed her again.

“If you don’t know what love is then why did you say I would fall in love with you if you didn’t know what love is!” I expound.

“I don’t know sir, Joseph, I’m just saying what I’ve been told!” she replied.

“Okay, for the fact that you haven’t fallen in love with anyone still shocks me.!” I laughed.

“I haven’t!” she stated gulping down an entire bottled water.

“Have you ever liked something so much you wanted to see it or feel it or pepharps a food you want so much?” I tried to make her understand.

“Yes, if that is what you mean, I am definitely falling in love with this sir, Joseph!” Kathleen said showing me the drumstick in her hand.

“Oh okay so you love drumsticks.” I said.

“If that is what it is called, then I definitely love it!” she smiled.

“Okay good, now have you ever loved a person just like the way you love this drumsticks?” I asked and she nodded right away.

Finally making progress. “Okay then, who?” I asked.

    “Mary” she replied immediately.

“Mary… You mean my daughter?” I asked to be sure.

“Yes, she’s just beautiful!” Kathleen smiled at my daughter and I sighed.

Somehow I didn’t trust that love.

“Okay then, loving Mary is still totally different from actually loving the opposite sex and who’s way more older than Mary!” I explained.

“I don’t understand what you’re trying to say sir, Joseph!” Kathleen glanced at me, I was trying to catch her gaze but I couldn’t.

“You know what, just forget about it!” I sighed.

She nodded and start to eat, every food she devoured she had this happy expression and I could tell she was really enjoying the food and I haven’t eaten half of mine.

We both remained quiet until Kathleen raised her head up and asked.

“Have you ever fallen in love before sir, Joseph!”

     I smiled, “Yeah!”

She gasped. “Really? What was it like?”

“It was beautiful, I loved her so much, the world was so colourful and I was going to die of excitement, every day of my life seeing her I felt complete and blessed!” I smiled recalling the days of Suzanne.

“Whoa!” Kathleen said.  “And where is she now?”

“She uhm… she left, she left Mary and I alone!” I sighed, and after feeding Mary I started with my own food.

“Oh wait, she was Mary’s mom right?” Kathleen asked.

    “Yeah!”

“And she left you guys, why?” Kathleen sure does ask a lot of questions.

But I answered them all anyway, there’s nothing better than quenching the thirst of curiosity.

“For some reason, The love she had for me faded!” I explained.

    “Love fades?” she gasped.

“For some people it does, for some it lasts forever.” I expound.

“Oh now I understand, so she left you guys just like that, her love faded from Mary’s side too. I hope she never finds happiness!” Kathleen stated and I dropped my fork and looked up at her.

“Do not say that! Just because she left Mary and I doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be happy, Mary and I are happy without her, she deserves to be happy too!” I half yelled.

Kathleen laughed. “Sir, Joseph, studying you haven’t been so bad. But no matter how hard you try to follow the negativity of life, you’re just so nice, you’re too nice, very nice, you can’t even say no!”

“Being a bad person will take you nowhere!” I stated.

“Whatever, but I’ve said what I said, and trust me it is happening right now, she will never find happiness!” Kathleen gave a strange smile.

“Can you stop saying that!” I yelled.

She rolled her eyes “Sir, Joseph, I don’t like it when you yell, and besides there are some people you need to be the good guy for and the bad guy for.! You can’t just be the good guy for everyone!”

I scoffed. “Oh really, and with me you’re totally being the bad guy right?”

“Bad guy?” she repeated and laughed. “Sir, Joseph I am not just being a good guy to you, I am being the nicest guy to you and nice is different than good.”

“Okay, if this is your good side, then I guess your bad side must be worse!” I huffed.

Kathleen glanced at me and smiled.

“I don’t want you to ever see my bad side. You can’t see it, you won’t be able to see it, cause you have to make me pretty mad to see my bad side. But you’re way too nice to make someone mad!” she saidand continued  to eat.

“Aren’t you full?” I suddenly asked.

    “Full of what?” she asked.

“Food, you’ve been eating non stop, I had no idea girls eat this much like you!” I stated.

“I guess I just like the foods here!” she smiled.

I noticed Mary had fallen asleep in my arms and I smiled.

I dropped my fork, ready to go drop Mary on the bed when Kathleen stood up.

“Don’t, worry sir, Joseph, I’ll drop her in the room for you, you can relax and eat!” Kathleen offered taking Mary from me.

“Oh, thanks!” I said, kind of speechless by her kindness.

I watched her cuddle Mary in her arms AndaSeea@0  she walked away and into my room to lay down Mary’s sleeping body.

Kathleen came back to the living room and sat down in front of me to continue eating again.

We were both done with dinner, and no matter how she pleaded to do the dishes, I made it clear to her that she was just a guest and I did the dishes myself.

It was getting late and yet again she didn’t want to leave. Mary woke up that evening crying and before I could even attend to my daughter, Kathleen beat me to it.

I walked into the room to see Mary in her hand, Mary was quiet, though I was glad I said.

“Are you trying to steal my child from me?”

“is that what it looks like I’m trying to do?” she threw back the question.

    “Seems like it!” I Joked.

I took Mary from her and thanked her.

“Thank you for today, it’s getting dark, you should leave!” I said in the most polite way.

     She sighed. “Fine! I’m leaving!”

She walked to the door, paused and turned to me. “Do you want me to babysit Mary again tomorrow?”

“No” I shook my head. “I will be home all day, so there’s no need for a babysitter!” I stated.

She smiled “Okay then, sir Joseph!” she said and with a little wave at Mary she left.

    *

That night, I took a night bath, gave Mary hers too, read her bedtime story that led the two of us to sleep.

The next morning I was woken up by Mary’s cry.

I turned to the side of the bed to see Mary in full tears, her face red, her mouth, wide open that let’s out her scream.

I quickly let her into my arms and pat her back.

“Shh… it’s okay Mary” I said standing up.

I didn’t know what happened or why she started crying all of a sudden.

But as I pat her back and consoled her, she didn’t stop crying.

Did she have a bad dream or what? Do babies even dream.

I walked around the house to get her to move and stop crying but she wouldn’t stop crying.

I opened the exit door and walked out of the house, it was just 6:59am the sun wasn’t up at that time.

Immediately we got outside the house Mary stopped crying.

“Oh so you wanted a little bit of nature!” I smiled seeing as she looked around her environment.

She looked at the lake in front of our house.

Looked at the little grass that grew around our house and where we stood.

“Like what you see?” I asked and touched her nose and she gave a cute smile.

“Sir, Joseph!” I heard Kathleen’s too familiar voice behind me and I turned to see her walking close to me.

    What a beaut!.

Her black hair was at her shoulder and her skin was very smooth, the blue dress she wore had no sleeve and it exposed her arms.

“What are you and Mary doing outside?” she asked as she got close to us.

“Taking a little bit of natural air!” I replied.

    “Oh okay!” she smiled.

“You cut your hair!” I tell her.

“Yes, I took your advice, though my friends said it looked horrible.!” she sighed.

I shook my head. “It looks beautiful, it really suits you!” I said and she gasped.

    “Really? It does?”.

    “Yeah it does!” I replied.

“Sir, Joseph, the sun will be out soon, why don’t we head inside!” Kathleen said after a brief moment of silent.

She was standing beside me and I turned to her.

“And it will be a morning sun, morning sun is very good for the body, tell me now, do you have a sun skin allergy?” I asked.

    She laughed. “Well kind of!”

“Oh, okay then we’ll head inside if that’s the case!” I said.

Kathleen breathed out a sigh of relief as I made a turn to head inside.

Kathleen took Mary from me as we all head inside and I shook my head.

     She really likes Mary.

“Why are you here so early anyways, don’t you have things you do or places to go?” I asked as we made it into the living room.

“No, I’m just home all day, so glad i found out about this place, now I can spend my free time here!” she stated.

“My home isn’t a free time place, you know!” I stated.

“Well all I know is, your home is the best! Nobody’s treated me the way you have!” she said sitting down on the couch and placing Mary on her lap.

“I’m sure I’ve treated you just like others have treated you.!” I said.

“Nope, they were all mean and I don’t want to talk about it!” Kathleen said.

“Okay, since we’re both awake Mary needs her bath now!” I said, taking Mary from Kathleen.

As I head to the bathroom Kathleen trailed behind me.

I paused and turned to her, my eyes almost caught hers but she looked away immediately.

“Where are you going?” I asked.

“To watch Mary have her bath!” Kathleen replied!” I said.

“But i don’t want to be a guest!” she sighed.

“What?” I laughed. “and you want to be a what? You can’t be more than a guest Kathleen!”

     “that was mean!” Kathleen huffed.

I felt Kathleen’s glare at me and I turned to look at her.

She had a glare on me but you could tell she was playfully glaring.

We made an eye contact as she failed to not look away and so did I and there again I felt that inner shock in my body. It made me flinch on the  outside and she smirked before walking away.

     What the hell.
